When to go

Best time to visit Portugal

Portugal's best water season is broadly April to October, but the "best" region shifts with your priorities.

Best overall window

April - October (most regions), July - September (Azores offshore focus)

Warmest water and longest daylight. Mainland often has afternoon northerly winds that can reach 35 km/h; plan earlier boat departures.

Outside that window

More Atlantic swell and storms on the mainland. Water can feel 14°C to 18°C; Madeira remains the easiest region for reliable water time.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.
