Season planner for Portugal

Portugal's best water season is broadly April to October, but the "best" region shifts with your priorities. For mainland scuba and snorkeling, late spring through early autumn offers the warmest water and the most workable sea states, while winter brings larger swell and fewer calm days. Madeira has the most consistent year-round access and milder water. The Azores need the most flexibility: July to September is the best bet for offshore-bank attempts, but even then weather can cancel boats, so plan buffer days and enjoy topside alternatives.

Use the tracks below to match your activity to the right region, then plan mornings-first on windy summer days.

Ideal: Warmest water and longest daylight. Mainland often has afternoon northerly winds that can reach 35.0 kph; plan earlier boat departures.

Plan Carefully: More Atlantic swell and storms on the mainland. Water can feel 14°C to 18°C; Madeira remains the easiest region for reliable water time.

If your trip has no flexibility, use Madeira as the reliability anchor.

Ideal: Best blend of water temperature and sea state. Mainland water often reaches 18°C to 22°C; Madeira can sit near 20°C to 24°C.

Plan Carefully: Storm-driven swell and low visibility days are more common on the mainland. Choose sheltered sites or shift your plan to Madeira when possible.

Mainland westcoast sites are most swellsensitive.

Ideal: Warmest water and best comfort for longer sessions. Mainland and Madeira often sit around 18°C to 24°C depending on location.

Plan Carefully: Cold water and more swell on the mainland. Pool sessions or Madeira coves can be a better use of time than forcing open-water days.

On the mainland in summer, afternoon winds can build quickly, so schedule sessions early.

Ideal: Warmest mainland water and the best chance of calm bays. Expect busy beaches and boat traffic in popular areas.

Plan Carefully: Cold water and more swell on the mainland. If snorkeling is a priority, consider Madeira where water stays milder (often above 18°C).

Snorkeling quality is heavily forecastdependent in Portugal.

Ideal: Comfortable hiking weather and fewer peak-summer crowds. Great for mainland road trips and island trails.

Plan Carefully: Winter can be wet and windy, and midsummer can be hot inland while windy on the coast. Schedule boat tours for the calmest forecast windows.

For boatbased wildlife tours, late spring through early autumn generally offers the best sea conditions.
