Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Broome International Airport (BME)
  • Typical transfer: 2 km drive
  • Entry requirement: Australia entry requirements depend on passport.
  • Getting around: In Broome: rental cars are the easiest way to move between Cable Beach, Chinatown, and tide timed viewpoints.

Getting There

Most trips start by flying to Broome International Airport (BME), typically connecting via Perth (PER) if you are arriving from interstate or internationally.

Rowley Shoals access is almost always by multi night liveaboard or expedition cruise departing Broome. Vessels usually leave around sunset and arrive the next morning after an overnight passage, so plan your Broome accommodation and meals around embarkation time.

Tip: do not book tight flight connections on either end. Weather and sea conditions can shift schedules.

Getting Around

  • In Broome: rental cars are the easiest way to move between Cable Beach, Chinatown, and tide timed viewpoints. Taxis and hotel transfers exist, but do not assume rideshare coverage.
  • Tours: for Dampier Peninsula and longer regional trips, guided tours reduce risk (road conditions can change seasonally).
  • For Rowley Shoals: once you embark, transport is handled by the vessel and tenders.

Entry Requirements

Australia entry requirements depend on passport. Many visitors use either an ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651) applied online or via the official app.

  • Apply before travel and carry the same passport used in the application.
  • Australia has strict biosecurity rules. Declare food, plant materials, and outdoor gear that may carry soil.

Always confirm the current visa option and fees for your nationality on the Australian Government Home Affairs site before booking non-refundable travel.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • Domestic flights: check baggage limits on your route. Many divers aim for a compact kit: mask, computer, regs, and critical spares in carry on where possible.
  • Liveaboard reality: you are far from dive shops offshore. Bring spares for mask straps, fin straps, O-rings, batteries, and any prescription items.
  • Surface signaling: an SMB is strongly recommended for drift sites. A small audible device is also helpful.
  • Sun and exposure: long sleeve layers reduce both sunburn and the need for repeated sunscreen applications.

Practicalities

Currency

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Cards are widely accepted in Broome (hotels, restaurants, tour desks). Carry some cash for markets and smaller vendors, especially on event nights.

ATMs are available in Broome around Chinatown and major shopping areas. Do not assume any cash access offshore at Rowley Shoals.

Electricity

230V 50Hz I

Australia uses plug type I. Bring an adapter if you are arriving from North America, Europe, or the UK.

Communications

  • In Broome: mobile coverage is generally reliable in town. Telstra typically has the best regional reach, but check your provider.
  • Offshore at Rowley Shoals: expect limited or no mobile coverage. Some vessels offer satellite phone access or limited Wi-Fi, but do not rely on it.
  • Download offline maps and keep key documents accessible without data.

Language

English is the main language. Broome is Rubibi on Yawuru Country, and you may see local place names and language used in cultural contexts and signage.

Insurance

Strongly consider:

  • Travel insurance that covers remote area evacuation.
  • Dive accident insurance if you will scuba dive or freedive.

Confirm coverage for liveaboard diving, evacuation, and trip interruption due to weather.

Packing list
