Wreck penetration, deep shoals and technical profiles require the matching certification, redundant equipment and gas plan.
Treat unusual fatigue, joint pain, skin changes, breathing difficulty, weakness, numbness, confusion or balance problems after diving as urgent. Stop diving, give the highest available oxygen concentration if trained, call 112 for local emergency response and contact DAN Europe. Do not self-drive to a presumed chamber and do not rely on symptom improvement as proof that the problem has resolved.
Calabria's emergency number is 112, which the regional health authority describes as free, multilingual and active 24/7. DAN Europe's international diving emergency hotline is +39 0642115685 and can advise on the appropriate facility and evacuation. The official ASP Reggio Calabria page for the Palmi Hyperbaric Medicine Center states that, since 2018, staffing limitations have prevented it from treating diving emergencies such as decompression illness and arterial gas embolism; it currently operates as an outpatient facility. Therefore, do not plan Palmi as the default emergency chamber. Before the trip, ask the operator for its current emergency assistance plan. During an incident, let 112 and DAN identify the receiving hospital and operational hyperbaric route.
Strait tides and strong current
Scilla's currents can strengthen, reverse or form complex flow. Never self-plan its signature reefs from a generic tide app alone; use a local operator's current table, briefing and abort criteria.
Summer boat traffic and crowding
July and August bring rental boats, excursions, beach crowds and limited parking. Use visible surface gear, early departures and formal pickup points rather than swimming across a busy route.
Depth and thermoclines
Several reefs continue far below the recreational route, and deep Mediterranean water can feel much cooler than the surface. Agree on a hard depth before descent and carry suitable exposure protection.
Weather-led cancellations
Wind and rough sea can stop exposed coastal boats or force a different cove. Keep flexible tickets, extra dive days and a museum or town alternative rather than a one-dive must-do schedule.
The protected park includes Posidonia oceanica meadows, rocky shoals, arches, cavities and fish nursery habitat. Maintain neutral buoyancy, secure gauges and alternate air sources, and never kneel on seagrass or reef. Use designated moorings where available and do not drop an anchor into Posidonia.
Do not touch, chase, feed or collect marine life. For loggerhead turtles, avoid approaching head-on, blocking the route, pursuing the animal or making physical contact. Report a distressed turtle through 112 or the local Coast Guard and follow instructions. Underwater archaeological remains are protected context, not souvenirs; leave every object in place and report significant finds to the operator or competent authority.
Choose centers that brief buoyancy, carry emergency oxygen, manage waste and use park moorings. Bring a refillable bottle, minimize single-use plastic and use sun protection that reduces direct contamination of the water.
