When to go

Best time to visit Crete

Crete is viable for local diving most of the year, but the best traveler window is May to October.

Best overall window

May to October, with May, June, September, and October easiest

Warm air, active operators, better hiking comfort, and sea temperatures moving from spring cool to autumn warm around 20°C to 26°C.

Outside that window

Cooler water around 16°C to 18°C, winter rain and storms, fewer tours, and limited divecenter schedules.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

Regional timing around Crete

AreaBest monthsWhy it changes
North Coast: Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Elounda

May to October, with September and October especially useful

This is the easiest coast for airports, hotels, and operators, but summer northerly winds can make boat rides and exposed sites less predictable.

Main caution: Wind Exposed Departures.

South Coast: Plakias, Skinaria, Paleochora

May to November, with June, September, and October strongest

The south coast can be excellent when north winds affect the Aegean side, but local winds, mountain roads, and more limited operators make forecast checks essential.

Main caution: Crossings and exposed sites can feel rougher in this stretch.

Mountains, gorges, and archaeology

April to June and September to October

Hikes and ruins are best outside peak heat.

Main caution: Heat Exposure.

Always true for this destination
  • This destination stays workable through the full year.
  • Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.
  • Same-day route swaps become more likely when weather builds.
Seasonal cautions
  • Jul to Aug: Peak summer is lively and warm but often hotter, busier, and more wind affected.
  • Dec to Mar: Winter travel can be rewarding but requires flexible local planning and fewer water expectations.
