When to go
El Hierro is a yearround destination, but the easiest allaround planning windows are April to June and September to November.
Best overall window
Warm water, excellent visibility, calmer southcoast planning, and strong pelagic potential around La Restinga.
Outside the easiest stretch
Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.
Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.
The overall row stays visible so you can compare it against the currently selected scope.

| Area | Best months | Why it changes |
|---|---|---|
| La Restinga and Mar de Las Calmas | September to November | The sheltered south is the main dive and freedive planning zone, with autumn favored for warm water and cleaner surface management. Main caution: Same-day route swaps become more likely when weather builds. |
| North coast and El Golfo natural pools | April to June and September to October | Charco Azul, La Maceta, and other lava pools can be superb, but Atlantic swell matters more than the calendar. Main caution: Crossings and exposed sites can feel rougher in this stretch. |
These do not replace the overall planner. Use them only if a specific animal or event is driving your trip dates.
