Germany's offshore red rock, where protected North Sea nature outranks easy access
Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.
Ferry is the normal visitor route. In the main season, roughly late March through October, official tourism information lists several mainland and island departures. The year-round backbone is MS Helgoland from Cuxhaven to Helgoland's South Harbor. Seasonal alternatives include the fast Halunder Jet from Hamburg via Brunsbuettel and Cuxhaven, MS Funny Girl from Buesum, and selected catamaran service from Hornum on Sylt. From early November, the official tourism authority describes Cuxhaven with Cassen Eils as the regular winter route.
Treat every sailing as weather-dependent. Compare the carrier timetable with the official Helgoland ferry-change page on the day of travel. Buy a through rail-and-ferry plan only when its missed-connection protection is explicit, and leave a mainland buffer before an international flight. The official tourism notice dated January 21, 2026 stated that regular OFD air service was not operating and that the Duene airfield was available to private aircraft. Do not base a trip on scheduled air service without fresh confirmation.

The small airfield is on Duene, about 2 km east of the main island. The official tourism authority reported on January 21, 2026 that regular OFD service was not operating, so this should be treated as a private-aircraft facility unless a current official source confirms otherwise.

A useful international gateway for onward rail to Cuxhaven or seasonal transfer to the Halunder Jet departure in Hamburg. It is not the island airport and still requires a North Sea crossing.

The main island is designed around walking. Private motor vehicles are generally prohibited, and ordinary bicycle use is restricted under the island's special traffic rules. Electric taxis, island sightseeing trains, and the lift between Lower Land and Upper Land help with mobility. Duene requires the municipal ferry, whose mainland-island departure point can move between the landing bridge and northeast harbor according to weather. Pack baggage that one person can handle across short walking transfers, ramps, and changing piers.
Helgoland is part of Germany, so immigration follows German and Schengen rules. Passport, visa, permitted stay, and document-validity requirements depend on nationality and travel history; verify them through the German Federal Foreign Office and the responsible consulate. Helgoland has special customs and tax status and is outside the normal European Union customs and VAT territory for relevant purposes. Travelers returning to the mainland must follow German Customs allowances and declaration rules. Check the current official limits rather than relying on shop signage or an old guide.
No routine public recreational dive center, visitor cylinder rental, gas fill, or cold-water equipment package was verified in the reviewed official sources. An authorized project must confirm every cylinder, compressor, gas, weight, boat, oxygen kit, workshop, and storage arrangement in writing before travel. AWI's infrastructure is scientific, not retail.
Ask each carrier for written approval before transporting pressurized cylinders, large lithium batteries, oxygen equipment, weights, tools, or oversize cases. Do not arrive at the gangway assuming airline rules apply to a ship. On the municipal Duene ferry, the published tariff includes one piece of hand luggage and one additional bag; extra or special baggage is listed at EUR 2.50 per piece. Keep critical clothing and medication in a small waterproof carry-on.

Cards are accepted at many accommodations, restaurants, and shops, but small purchases, local transport, or a temporary terminal outage can still make cash useful. Helgoland's special customs and tax status affects goods and allowances, not the everyday currency.
Official visitor information lists ATMs in Lower Land at Helgoland Sparkasse and Volksbank. Edeka may offer cash back with an eligible purchase. Withdraw before a busy weekend or winter stay rather than relying on every machine or terminal being available.

Germany uses continental European sockets. Travelers from other plug systems should carry a compliant adapter, and all chargers should be marked for 230V input.
Communications
German mobile networks and roaming arrangements generally apply, but offshore position, building construction, and sea travel can create variable coverage. The official guest FAQ identifies public Wi-Fi around selected facilities, including the library and airport building, and notes that many accommodations offer internet. Download tickets, weather warnings, maps, emergency numbers, and ferry confirmations for offline use.
Language
German is the working language for transport, emergency services, rules, and authority coordination. English is common in tourism but should not be assumed for technical permits. Halunder, the local North Frisian language, remains part of Helgoland's cultural identity. Use German names and transliterations consistently when searching official documents.
Insurance
Choose travel insurance that covers weather-related delay, missed onward transport, extra island accommodation, medical evacuation, and the actual activities planned. Standard holiday policies may exclude research, occupational, archaeological, technical, cold-water, or unapproved diving. Obtain written confirmation that the exact project, depth, gas, boat work, equipment, and country are covered, and identify a recompression and repatriation assistance route before travel.
Packing list
Pack a windproof waterproof shell, warm midlayers, grippy footwear, hat, gloves outside summer, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars, a small dry bag, reusable bottle, and motion-sickness medication. Keep medication, documents, one warm layer, and electronics in carry-on luggage. Summer swimmers need a warm suit, towel or changing robe, bright cap, and shore layers. Authorized dive teams should bring only equipment already accepted by the carrier and project lead, including cold-water spares that cannot be sourced locally.
