Tide-led wrecks, seagrass shallows, and maritime history across Britain's island strait

The island has no commercial airport, so most visitors combine mainland rail or road with a Solent crossing. From London Waterloo, rail connections serve Portsmouth, Southampton, and Lymington gateway stations. Wightlink carries vehicles from Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Lymington to Yarmouth, plus foot passengers from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head. Red Funnel links Southampton with West Cowes for foot passengers and East Cowes for vehicles. Hovertravel links Southsea and Ryde for foot passengers. Southampton Airport is the closest practical commercial airport; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Bournemouth can also feed the mainland rail or road network. Divers using a Lymington charter should compare a mainland overnight with an island stay and confirmed Yarmouth pickup.
A car is useful for cylinders, remote beaches, and early charter logistics, but it is not essential for a carefully based trip. Southern Vectis buses link towns, resorts, and many rural areas.
