Warm-water pinnacles, a signature wreck, and snorkel bays in Thailand's Turtle Island dive town
Updated Jan 23, 2026 • 15 sources
Overview
Koh Tao (Turtle Island) is Thailand's compact dive-and-breathe hub in the Gulf of Thailand: easy reef bays for training, offshore pinnacles for adrenaline, and a navy shipwreck within short boat rides. Water stays warm around 27°C to 30°C, and in the calmer season visibility often reaches 15 m to 30 m. March to May is the classic window for glassier seas and the best odds of whale-shark sightings, while February to April is also a favorite for sunny beach days. Non-divers can circle the island by longtail to hop snorkel bays, then climb viewpoint trails for postcard shots of Koh Nang Yuan's sandbar. At night, Sairee's beach bars keep the energy up, but quiet bays on the east and south coasts still feel remote. Use Koh Tao as a base to connect onward to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, or time a trip around your dives and the ferry schedule.
Short boat rides reach deep granite pinnacles (Chumphon, Southwest) and the HTMS Sattakut wreck, so you can mix adrenaline dives with mellow reef time.
A dense dive-and-freedive community means frequent departures, many course options, and an easy path from beginner training to advanced specialties.
Aow Leuk, Hin Wong, Tanote, and Shark Bay deliver coral and wildlife close to shore, plus Koh Nang Yuan for iconic shallow gardens.
Expect water around 27°C to 30°C with seasonal swings in visibility and surface chop.
