Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.
Most international teams use Toulouse-Blagnac, collect a rental vehicle, and drive about 161 km to Gramat. Brive Vallee de la Dordogne is much closer to Gramat at roughly 42 km, but its route network is limited and seasonal. Rodez-Aveyron is useful for Cajarc at about 67 km by road, again with a smaller schedule. Gramat has regional rail access, but trains and buses do not solve the final journey to scattered cave heads, fill stations, rural accommodation, and heavy equipment. A road trip from elsewhere in France or neighboring Europe is often the simplest format for teams carrying personal cave gear.

A rental car or team vehicle is effectively essential. Cave entrances, fill stations, rural gites, Cajarc, Gramat, Marcilhac-sur-Cele, Padirac, and Rocamadour are spread across narrow country roads with limited public transport. Choose a vehicle with enough secure space for drysuits, stages, wet crates, and personal bags, but avoid an oversized van if the team is uncomfortable on tight lanes. Park only where authorized, do not block farm access, close gates, and keep gear off the carriageway. Regional trains can reach Gramat or Figeac, but last-mile taxis should be reserved in advance.
France is in the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss travelers normally use a valid passport or accepted national identity document. Requirements for other nationalities vary, so check France-Visas and France Diplomatie for visa status, document validity, funds, insurance, and supporting evidence. Short-stay visitors are generally subject to the Schengen 90-days-in-180 rule when applicable. At the research date, the EU Entry/Exit System was operational for covered non-EU short-stay travelers. ETIAS was expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026, but the official portal had not announced a specific launch date. Use only the official EU site and verify again immediately before travel.
Rent cylinders locally unless the team has confirmed airline, valve-removal, cleaning, and dangerous-goods requirements. Reserve oxygen, helium, nitrox, sorb, boosters, bailout cylinders, stage bottles, and CCR-specific support well ahead, because not every center stocks every gas or fitting. Carry personal regulators, lights, computers, harness, reels, exposure protection, seals, and mission-critical spares. Ask whether the accommodation has a secure equipment room, drying space, rinse access, charging, and cylinder storage. Keep wet or muddy cave equipment out of ordinary guest rooms and vehicles where the host or rental agreement prohibits it.
Euro (EUR)
Cards are widely useful in towns, supermarkets, fuel stations, attractions, and established operators. Carry some cash for small rural businesses, markets, campsite extras, or a backup when connectivity fails. Confirm payment method and deposits with technical providers before arrival.
ATMs are available in larger towns such as Gramat, Cajarc, Figeac, and Cahors, but not at cave entrances or every village. Withdraw before a remote accommodation or multi-day training block and keep a second card separate.

Bring a Type C or E adapter and verify that chargers are rated for 230V. Ask accommodation about secure overnight charging for primary lights, backups, scooters, cameras, and CCR electronics, and never overload rural circuits.
Communications
French mobile networks and EU roaming work in towns, but limestone valleys, rural roads, and cave entrances can have weak or absent coverage. Download offline maps and cave coordinates, keep emergency details on paper, and arrange a surface contact who understands the overdue plan. Accommodation Wi-Fi may be adequate for planning but should not be assumed fast enough for large video or map uploads.
Language
French is the default language for landowners, emergency services, signs, and many local businesses. Specialist cave-diving centers commonly work with international clients and may offer English or other languages, but confirm this when booking. Carry the French names of sites, exact coordinates, accommodation address, medical conditions, and key emergency phrases offline.
Insurance
Use insurance that explicitly covers cave penetration, the planned depth, decompression, technical gases, CCR or DPV use, search and rescue, medical evacuation, and recompression. Standard travel or recreational-scuba policies may exclude overhead, training, solo practice, or technical profiles. Carry proof of cover and the insurer's emergency number. Operators may require valid DAN or federation insurance plus a current medical certificate for supervised discovery or courses.
Packing list
For scuba, prioritize a drysuit or suitable 7mm system, hood, gloves, redundant regulators and lights, reels, cutting devices, computers, wetnotes, spare seals, batteries, chargers, and a compact repair kit. Add non-slip footwear for muddy or pebbled approaches, waterproof crates, changing mats, warm post-dive layers, rain protection, and sun protection. For topside days, pack grippy walking shoes, a light layer for show caves, refillable water, and offline maps. Label technical bags clearly and photograph packed equipment before flights.
