Wrecks, gorgonian walls and limestone calanques at Marseille's doorstep
Wind, depth and protected-area rules are the main planning issues.
Use a DSMB, match deep wrecks to certification and recent experience, and accept weather-driven site changes. Freedivers should never dive alone and should use a visible surface marker. Sea distress: 196 by phone or VHF channel 16.
AP-HM Hopitaux Sud/Sainte-Marguerite has a hyperbaric, diving and maritime medicine service. Official hyperbaric emergency phone: +33 4 91 74 49 96.
Mistral
Can rapidly create short steep seas and cool the surface.
Summer fire closures
Land access can be prohibited from June 1 to September 30.
Depth
Several famous wrecks and walls extend beyond standard recreational limits.
Do not anchor on Posidonia or touch coralligenous growth. Carry-le-Rouet and Cap Couronne reserves prohibit scuba, anchoring, fishing and collection. Snorkelers should not feed wildlife, turn stones or walk on Posidonia.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when mistral. Confirm local briefings before committing.
