Best time to go

Late spring through early autumn is easiest for combining diving, snorkeling and topside time, but wind can disrupt any season.
Main caution: Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.

Wrecks, gorgonian walls and limestone calanques at Marseille's doorstep
Overview
Marseille combines a major Mediterranean city with varied local diving. Day boats reach Frioul, Planier, Riou and the Calanques, while the Cote Bleue adds protected shallows and another coastal cluster. Terrain includes Posidonia meadows, rocky reefs, coralligenous walls, arches and historic wrecks. Advanced depth is important, but selected sheltered sites suit newer divers. Conditions are wind-dependent: mistral can build short seas and cool surface water, while easterly weather can bring swell, current and poorer visibility. Mixed groups benefit from city culture, island ferries, hiking and snorkeling.

Museums, food and transit pair naturally with day-boat diving.
