Pair clear Adriatic boat dives with Croatia's greenest island escape
Mljet is a remote-island environment with limited local medical capacity, exposed Adriatic coasts, working ferry and yacht traffic, protected archaeological material, and strict national-park rules. The safest plan uses a registered operator, conservative profiles, current weather and ferry checks, and insurance that covers evacuation and hyperbaric treatment.
Call Croatia's 112 for a life-threatening emergency and 195 for maritime rescue. For a possible diving injury, give oxygen when trained and available, stop further diving, keep the diver hydrated only if fully alert and not nauseated, and call emergency services plus DAN Europe. Do not self-direct a long transfer to a chamber without medical coordination.
Follow computer and training-agency guidance for repetitive dives, altitude, and flying. Stop diving for unusual fatigue, rash, joint pain, numbness, weakness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or balance changes, and seek immediate diving-medicine advice.
Mljet National Park lists clinics in Govedari and Babino Polje, a dentist in Govedari, and a pharmacy in Babino Polje, with seasonal medical reinforcement. These services should not be treated as a substitute for an emergency department or hyperbaric unit. No confirmed recompression chamber is located on Mljet.
Dubrovnik has hyperbaric capability listed by regional visitor and medical sources, including Polyclinic Marin Med, but facility status and acceptance can change. Call 112 and DAN Europe first so the diver is routed to the appropriate active facility. A serious evacuation may involve ambulance, road, boat, ferry, or helicopter decisions. Carry medication, allergy details, certification, insurance, and emergency contacts offline.
No Underwater Activities in the Park Lakes
Scuba and other underwater activities are prohibited in both the Great and Small Lakes. Use designated areas for surface swimming and direct snorkeling or freediving to approved open-sea locations.
Cave and Overhead Risk
Odysseus Cave can become hazardous with surge, reduced visibility, and a compromised exit. Do not enter overhead space without the correct training, guide, sea state, and rescue plan.
Boat and Ferry Traffic
Pomena, Polace, Sobra, and yacht anchorages are working navigation areas. Use a visible surface marker, stay outside routes and moorings, and leave the water as traffic builds.
Exposed South-Coast Conditions
Wind and swell can make Lenga, Odysseus Cave, and other outer-coast objectives inaccessible even in summer. Accept site swaps and never pressure a skipper to run an exposed route.
Mljet National Park prohibits underwater activities in the Great and Small Lakes, fishing, wildlife disturbance or capture, collection of natural or cultural objects, dumping, fire, smoking outside designated areas, unauthorized camping, and leaving marked visitor routes. Follow ranger instructions and use official entrances.
At open-sea dive sites, use excellent buoyancy around rock, gorgonians, and seagrass; do not feed or chase animals; and secure gauges and alternate air sources. Archaeological finds belong to Croatia and must remain in place. Boaters should use authorized moorings or appropriate bare substrate rather than anchoring through Posidonia, and no vessel should discharge waste into the sea.
