When to go

Best time to visit Rhodes

Rhodes works best when you separate the island's underwater and topside seasons.

Best overall window

May to June and September to October

Dry, bright, and generally comfortable, with warmenough water for most divers and manageable topside heat.

Outside that window

Cooler, wetter, and quieter, best for Old Town, villages, and opportunistic local diving rather than a divefirst trip.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

AreaBest monthsWhy it changes
East coast bays

May to October

Kalithea, Faliraki, Anthony Quinn, Ladiko, Lindos, and Pefkos are the default dive and snorkel corridor because they are generally more sheltered than the west coast.

Main caution: School Holiday Crowds.

Plimiri and Marine Park routes

June to October

Longerrange wreck and Marine Park trips can be excellent, but they rely more on minimum numbers, boat schedules, and manageable wind.

Main caution: Wind Exposed Departures.

West coast and Prasonisi

June to September for wind sports

The west and far south are better for windsurfing, kitesurfing, sunsets, and road trips than easy snorkeling.

Main caution: Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.

Wildlife goals and seasonal highlights

These do not replace the overall planner. Use them only if a specific animal or event is driving your trip dates.

  • Butterfly Valley Panaxia Season

    Best for Topside

    Jun to Sep

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

The inland Valley of Butterflies is known for Panaxia quadripunctaria butterflies in summer.

  • Loggerhead Turtle Awareness Window

    Best for Scuba, Snorkel, Topside

    May to Oct

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Greece is important for loggerhead turtles, and Rhodes is included in ongoing survey and awareness work.

  • Mediterranean Reef Fish and Octopus

    Best for Scuba, Snorkel, Freedive

    May to Oct

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Warmseason dives around Kalithea, Ladiko, and other rocky sites commonly feature bream, damselfish, pipefish, octopus, moray eels, and small cryptic life.

  • Marine Park Larger-Fish Chances

    Best for Scuba

    May to Oct

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Marine Park routes near restricted fishing areas and fishfarm structure can improve odds of grouper, barracuda, tuna, rays, and occasional dolphin sightings, though none are guaranteed.

  • Meltemi Wind Season

Best for Scuba, Snorkel, Freedive, Topside

    Jun to Sep

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

The Aegean meltemi can build afternoon wind and surface chop, especially in July and August.

Always true for this destination
  • Sun exposure stays high even when conditions are easy.
  • Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.
  • The island is genuinely visitable yearround, but the complete dive, snorkel, beach, and topside product is strongest from May through October.
Seasonal cautions
  • Jul to Aug: Peak summer is beach-friendly but hotter, busier, and more exposed to afternoon meltemi wind.
  • Dec to Mar: Winter is quieter and wetter, with fewer predictable water-activity schedules.
