Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.
Sauerland has no single gateway. Dortmund Airport is often the most balanced arrival for Sorpesee and the wider western circuit, Paderborn Lippstadt can be efficient for Nuttlar, and Cologne Bonn is useful for Biggesee. Duesseldorf offers the broadest major-airport network but usually the longest drive. International rail travelers can route toward regional towns such as Bestwig, Olpe or the Arnsberg area, then continue by local transport. A rental car remains the practical default because the mine check-in, dive shops, gated reservoir entries and accommodation are dispersed, and wet cold-water equipment is awkward on buses.
Dortmund Airport

A compact airport on the eastern edge of the Ruhr area with European and leisure routes. It is often the most balanced road gateway for Sorpesee and a multi-cluster circuit.

Paderborn Lippstadt Airport

Approximately 45 km to Nuttlar and up to about 125 km for the western lake cluster • About 45 minutesutes to Nuttlar; allow up to 2 hourss for Biggesee
A smaller regional airport that can be the shortest road approach to Nuttlar and Bestwig, but its route network is more limited than Duesseldorf or Cologne Bonn.

Cologne Bonn Airport

Approximately 80 km to 145 km, depending on the selected cluster • About 1.3 hourss to Biggesee and up to 2.3 hourss to Nuttlar
A larger 24-hour gateway with strong European connectivity and convenient access to the Biggesee side of the circuit.

Use a car for the dive program. Nuttlar check-in is on Briloner Strasse in Bestwig, the Sorpesee shop is in Sundern, and the Biggesee shop is near Olpe. Rail and buses can reach regional towns, but they do not solve early check-in, gate-key collection, wet-gear storage or shore access. For a weekend, base near the priority dive cluster and make one deliberate transfer. For a longer itinerary, a split stay near Sorpesee or Nuttlar and then Biggesee reduces repeated driving.
Germany is in the Schengen Area. Visa needs depend on nationality; many eligible non-EU visitors may make short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while other travelers need a Schengen visa in advance. A non-EU passport is generally expected to have been issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months after the planned Schengen departure. EU, EEA and Swiss travelers should carry an accepted national identity document. As of September 5, 2026, the Entry Exit System is operational for affected non-EU short-stay travelers, while ETIAS is not yet operational and is expected later in 2026. Requirements can change, so verify the German Federal Foreign Office and official EU travel portal for the exact travel date.
Air, Nitrox to 36 percent and oxygen fills are available through the operator network, with filling points listed at Sorpesee, Biggesee and Nuttlar. Do not fly pressurized cylinders; rent locally or transport privately in compliance with road and operator rules. Certified divers can rent individual items or a full wet kit, but Nuttlar has no on-site rental: arrange and collect gear from the Sorpesee shop before mine check-in. Carry regulators, computer, lights, thermal essentials and documents in hand luggage where airline rules permit. Confirm valve, working-pressure and gas-analysis compatibility before arrival.
Euro (EUR)
Cards are common at airports, hotels, larger restaurants and dive shops, but carry some cash for small rural businesses, parking, club contributions and any on-site payment.
ATMs are available in towns such as Sundern, Olpe, Attendorn and Bestwig, but should not be expected at remote shore entries or the mine check-in.

Bring a grounded Type F adapter when needed and use only dual-voltage chargers. Recharge primary and backup lights before remote or overhead dives.
Communications
Germany uses country code +49. Mobile coverage is generally available in towns, but forested valleys, remote banks and underground areas can have weak or no signal. Save operator and emergency numbers offline, download maps and share the exact access point with a surface contact. Wi-Fi is common at accommodation but should not be treated as a safety system.
Language
German is the operating language. English is often usable with tourism and dive businesses, but technical, overhead and emergency briefings must be fully understood. Arrange an English-speaking guide in advance rather than relying on ad hoc translation at check-in.
Insurance
Carry travel medical and dive-accident insurance that explicitly covers the planned depth, cold-water diving, technical gases, training and overhead or mine penetration where applicable. Nuttlar requires current proof covering diving accidents, and Kraghammer asks for insurance documentation.
