Plymouth delivers one of southern Britain's most concentrated wreck-and-reef menus. In Deep Dive Centre runs local boats, training, packages, and air, nitrox, and trimix support, while clubs and charters use Mount Batten as a practical launch point. Start with prepared or sheltered structures such as HMS Scylla, Panther Shoal, or Breakwater Fort; progress to James Egan Layne, Hand Deeps, and current-sensitive offshore work. In Torbay, Teign Diving Centre and local BSAC activity add SS Bretagne, while Brixham Breakwater Beach gives a shallow shore alternative when a boat day is unnecessary or cancelled. The reward is atmospheric metal, temperate reef life, and genuine depth range. The price of that variety is cold water, variable visibility, tide dependence, and weather-driven site swaps.

Operator Checklist
Book by experience profile, not by site name alone. Send the operator your certification, number and recency of cold-water dives, maximum comfortable depth, decompression status, cylinder preferences, gas requirements, and rental needs. Plymouth operators may package diving, fills, parking, food, and accommodation, while Torbay plans often mix club boats, charter dates, and independent shore days. Carry two independent cutting tools, a large delayed SMB and reel, backup mask, primary and backup lights, audible surface signal, and a slate or wetnotes. Confirm whether cylinders must be O2-clean for the requested mix. Never enter Plymouth Sound shipping channels or dive HMT Elk without the skipper or supervisor addressing King's Harbour Master movements and local VTS procedures.
