When To Go

Season planner for South Male Atoll

South Male Atoll is diveable year-round, but conditions shift with the monsoons. The northeast monsoon (roughly December to April) is typically drier with calmer seas and better visibility, making it a favorite for first-time Maldives visitors. The southwest monsoon (roughly May to November) brings higher humidity, more rain squalls, and stronger winds, but can also increase plankton and current-driven action in channels. Water temperatures stay warm around 27°C to 30°C most of the year.

Ideal: Often the clearest water of the year, with visibility frequently in the 20 m to 30 m range on good days.

Plan Carefully: More plankton and wind can drop visibility to around 10 m to 20 m, but currents can fire up channel dives. Choose operators that brief downcurrents and run tight safety procedures.

If you are currentshy, tell your operator up front and ask for sheltered giris or insidereef sites on windier days.

Ideal: Best chance of glassier seas for buoy-based line training and deeper sessions, with reliable boat visibility and comfortable temps.

Plan Carefully: Wind and rain squalls make blue-water supervision harder. Prioritize lagoons and shorten sessions when winds exceed 25.0 kph.

Freediving is most enjoyable when you can control surface conditions.

Ideal: Calmer surface conditions for easy house-reef sessions and sandbank days. Visibility is often best in this window.

Plan Carefully: Choppier seas on the ocean side. Stick to lagoons, go with a guide, and use a flotation aid if you are not a strong swimmer.

Snorkel tours run yearround, but they may switch locations frequently in the southwest monsoon to stay in sheltered water.
