Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Velana International Airport (MLE)
  • Typical transfer: 25 km to 35 km by speedboat (operator dependent)
  • Entry requirement: Tourist arrivals typically receive a free tourist visa on arrival for up to 30 days, provided you meet entry conditions such as: A passport that is machinereadable and valid for at least 1 month Confirmed accommodation (hotel booking or liveaboard confirmation) Confirmed onward travel (return or onward ticket) Sufficient funds for the stay Maldives Immigration also requires submission of the Traveller Declaration (IMUGA) within {{ 96 | duration:hours }}s prior to departure to and from the Maldives.
  • Getting around: On resort islands and small local islands, most movement is on foot.

Getting There

Most travelers fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhule Island next to Male. South Male Atoll is close enough that many islands are reached by speedboat transfer the same day, often without needing a domestic flight or seaplane. Confirm your transfer arrangement before you book flights, especially if arriving late evening, because some public services stop earlier and weather can affect small-boat schedules.

Velana International Airport

MLE • VRMM

Typical South Male bases are roughly 25 km to 35 km by sea from MLE (for example Maafushi and Guraidhoo area islands). • 25 km to 35 km by speedboat (operator dependent)

The Maldives' main international gateway on Hulhule Island next to Male, with connections via the Middle East, Europe, and South Asia.

Transport: Resort-arranged speedboat, Private speedboat charter, Scheduled speedboats to local islands, Public ferry via Male (slowest)

Getting Around

On resort islands and small local islands, most movement is on foot. Between islands, transport is by scheduled speedboat, charter speedboat, or public ferry. For a Male visit, you can use ferries between Hulhule, Male, and Hulhumale, plus taxis once in the city. In the southwest monsoon, build flexibility because wind and rain can alter small-boat comfort and timing.

Entry Requirements

Tourist arrivals typically receive a free tourist visa on arrival for up to 30 days, provided you meet entry conditions such as:

  • A passport that is machine-readable and valid for at least 1 month
  • Confirmed accommodation (hotel booking or liveaboard confirmation)
  • Confirmed onward travel (return or onward ticket)
  • Sufficient funds for the stay

Maldives Immigration also requires submission of the Traveller Declaration (IMUGA) within 96 hours prior to departure to and from the Maldives. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country. As of an Immigration update dated 27 Aug 2025, entry is not granted to Israeli passport holders (effective 15 Apr 2025). Policies can change, so confirm requirements for your nationality and routing before travel.

Gear Logistics Checklist

South Male logistics are comparatively easy because transfers are mostly by speedboat, not seaplane. Still, plan for wet conditions: pack regulators and cameras in a dry bag for boat rides, and bring spare O-rings and a save-a-dive kit. Most dive centers provide tanks and weights; confirm whether you need boots for boat ladders or shore entries. If you are bringing a camera, ask about rinse tanks and dedicated camera tables on the boat. For reef safety, pack a rashguard and reef-safe sunscreen, and avoid purchasing coral or shell souvenirs.

Practicalities

Currency

Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR)

MVR is the official currency. Resorts and many tourist services price in USD and accept cards, while local-island shops and ferries often prefer small cash payments in MVR. Keep small bills for cafes, tips, and local transport.

ATMs are reliable in the airport area, Male, and Hulhumale. Availability on local islands varies; if you are heading to smaller islands, withdraw cash before you leave Male/Airport.

Electricity

230V 50Hz D, G

Most outlets are compatible with UK-style Type G and India-style Type D. Many resorts also provide universal sockets, but carry an adapter to be safe.

Communications

Mobile coverage is strong around Male and nearby atolls. Tourist SIMs and eSIMs are available from local providers (Dhiraagu and Ooredoo). Resorts typically have Wi-Fi, but speeds can vary by island and weather.

Language

Dhivehi is the official language. English is widely spoken in resorts, dive centers, and tourist services. On local islands, learning a few basic greetings is appreciated, but you can generally manage in English.

Insurance

Carry travel insurance that covers marine activities, and add dedicated dive accident coverage if you are scuba diving or freediving. Some operators may ask for proof of insurance for advanced channel dives.

Packing list

  • 3mm wetsuit or skins for long dives (most divers are comfortable year-round)
  • Surface marker buoy and whistle (essential for boat pickups)
  • Reef hook for current dives (use only where your operator allows)
  • Rashguard, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection
  • Dry bag for speedboat transfers
  • Plug adapter (Type G/D)
