Cagliari Elmas Airport is the practical gateway. From the terminal, travelers can rent a car, take the airport rail link into Cagliari and connect to an ARST bus, arrange a pre-booked transfer, or use a taxi. Villasimius lies roughly 65 km from the airport by road, depending on route. The coastal SP17 is scenic; the SS125 approach is often the more direct choice. Drivers arriving by ferry use the Port of Cagliari and continue southeast. Northern Sardinian airports and ports can work for a wider island road trip, but they add several hours of driving and are not the efficient gateway for a Capo Carbonara-focused stay.

Southern Sardinia's main airport and the closest useful gateway to Villasimius. Its route network is seasonal, so confirm the operating carrier and baggage allowance directly for the travel dates.

A rental car is the most reliable option for dive departures, several beaches in one day, early viewpoints, and shoulder-season travel. Villasimius is linked with Cagliari by ARST regional buses; the official tourism office identifies route 101 as the year-round service and route 135 as seasonal, but current timetables must be checked. The 2026 Villasimius Summer Bus links town and beaches between Porto Sa Ruxi and Capo Carbonara on a frequent day-to-evening schedule during its operating period. Taxis and private transfers fill gaps. Parking is regulated and often paid near major beaches, and Punta Molentis has separate controlled-access procedures.
Italy is in the EU and Schengen Area. EU citizens should travel with a valid passport or national identity card. Other travelers must use the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa checker for nationality, residence, trip purpose, and duration. Where the standard Schengen short-stay rule applies, the limit is generally 90 days in any 180-day period. Many non-EU visitors need a passport issued within the previous 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after planned Schengen departure. ETIAS was not operating or accepting applications on the research date, 5 September 2026; verify the official EU page before travel because implementation status can change. Carry insurance details, accommodation information, return or onward plans, and documents required for minors.
Pre-book rental equipment during July and August and send sizes before arrival. Confirm whether tanks use DIN or yoke-compatible valves, whether nitrox is available, and whether the operator supplies SMBs, computers, weights, and marine-reserve authorization. Airlines apply different sports-baggage limits, so weigh the bag and protect regulators and computers in hand luggage where security rules allow. Do not fly with cylinders, weights, or unapproved batteries. Choose lodging with a ventilated drying area, but never rinse salty equipment in pools or hang it over public balconies. Secure gear out of sight in parked cars and leave enough drying time before the return flight.
Euro (EUR)
Cards are widely useful at accommodation, restaurants, supermarkets, fuel stations, and established dive centers. Keep some cash for small kiosks, local buses, minor parking systems, and backup when terminals or mobile signal fail. Ask before relying on American Express or a phone-only wallet.
ATMs are available in Villasimius town and at Cagliari Airport, but beach areas and small coves should not be treated as cash-access points. Withdraw during normal town errands and avoid carrying a large amount on boats or leaving money in a vehicle.

Modern Italian type L sockets often also accept type C plugs, but compatibility varies. Bring a compact Italy or EU adapter and confirm that chargers are labeled for 230V input. High-power hair tools need true dual-voltage support, not only a plug adapter.
Communications
Italian mobile networks generally cover Villasimius and the main road, but coves, offshore islands, and the lee of granite headlands can have weaker data. EU and EEA visitors often use home plans under regulated roaming, subject to fair-use terms; others can buy an Italian SIM or eSIM. Download the MPA map, accommodation pin, bus timetable, emergency contacts, and operator instructions for offline use. Do not depend on mobile data for an at-sea emergency plan.
Language
Italian is the working language. Sardinian, including local Campidanese forms, is part of the island's cultural landscape. English is common in established tourism and dive operations, but not guaranteed for every medical, parking, or municipal interaction. Save Italian phrases for allergies, medical conditions, equipment problems, and emergency location details.
Insurance
Carry travel insurance covering medical care, repatriation, weather disruption, rental-car excess, and the specific activities planned. Scuba and freediving policies should cover hyperbaric treatment, search and rescue, specialist consultation, and the certified depth and gas used. An EHIC or GHIC may support eligible public care but does not replace activity insurance, private transport, cancellation protection, or repatriation. Save policy numbers and the emergency assistance line offline.
Packing list
For water days, pack a 3mm suit for warm-season comfort or a 5mm suit and optional hooded layer for cooler months and cold-sensitive divers. Add an SMB, computer, certification card, logbook, compact torch, reusable bottle, sun hat, polarized sunglasses, and a windproof boat layer. For land days, bring closed shoes, a light rain shell, a daypack, binoculars, and high-SPF sun protection. Include a type C/F/L-compatible adapter, copies of insurance and prescriptions, and any essential medication in hand luggage.
