Portuguese Cove
Shallow cove with lobsters and rock valleys
About Portuguese Cove
Portuguese Cove is a shallow Nova Scotia shore dive that rewards careful entry timing more than raw depth. Most divers work out of the mouth of the cove and head left into the rock valleys, with sand ripples, boulders, minor kelp, and occasional wreck-related finds keeping the route interesting. The entry is tide-sensitive and parking is awkward, so the site works best for divers who are comfortable planning around local conditions. Lobsters, sea urchins, and fish make it a good temperate-water cove dive rather than a polished facility site.

Portuguese Cove Planning Details
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
1.5m - 18.3m
Depth Note
The cove starts around 1.5 m at the entry and drops to about 18.3 m, with shallower sand and boulder areas near shore and deeper sand outside the mouth.
Best Season
Warmer months are the most useful period because the lobster and fish life is stronger and the shallow cove is easier to enjoy.
Typical Conditions
Shallow cove diving with sand ripples, boulders, minor kelp, and rock valleys; high tide is the easier entry window, and visibility is tide and weather dependent.
Safety & Access At Portuguese Cove
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Ask the locals before parking or entering, and use high tide when possible because the entry is easier then. Expect the site to feel different with tide, wind, and wave energy.
Access Restrictions
Local permission is recommended because parking and entry are informal. There are no restroom facilities at the site.
Legal Notes
Respect local parking and access customs, and do not assume there is any site infrastructure on the cove itself.
Local Intel For Portuguese Cove
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
A common plan is to work straight out over the sand ripples and boulders or head left out of the cove mouth into the rock valleys. The site is best when you have enough air to slow down and look for the little features instead of trying to cover distance.
Freedive
The shallow cove can suit casual freediving, but the entry and local-access friction make it a poor venue for impulse breath-hold sessions.
Snorkel
Snorkelling is possible in the shallow cove sections, but the site is mainly used as a scuba dive and the best bits are reached by a proper swim line.
