Blue Hole

Iconic shore-access sinkhole and wall dive north of Dahab.

Shore logistics are straightforward and the interior is relatively sheltered, but depth, route choice, and the arch demand disciplined planning with local guidance.

About Blue Hole

Blue Hole is Dahab's iconic shore-access sinkhole and outer-wall dive, combining an easy walk-in entry with a dramatic reef saddle and a steep cobalt drop-off. Recreational dives usually stay on the coral-fringed wall or the sheltered interior before returning to shore, while the deeper arch area is only appropriate for properly trained technical or advanced freediving teams. The appeal is the terrain, clear water, and busy Red Sea reef life around the rim rather than a gentle beginner circuit. Snorkelers can enjoy the shallow reef edge, but scuba and freedive plans should stay conservative, use local route knowledge, and avoid treating the arch as a casual add-on.

Blue Hole Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

6m - 130m

Depth Note

The saddle is at about 6 m, and the arch is described at around 26 m; the sinkhole is approximately 130 m deep.

Best Season

Diveable year round, with March to May and September to November usually offering the most comfortable air temperatures, warm water, and lighter crowding than peak summer and holiday periods.

Typical Conditions

Usually clear Red Sea water with mild conditions inside the hole and more movement on the outer wall. Early starts are preferred for calmer surface conditions and quieter entries.

Safety & Access At Blue Hole

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Overhead environment

Safety Notes

Treat Blue Hole as a planning-heavy site rather than a casual deep shore dive. Stay within certification limits, use a local guide familiar with the route, and reserve the arch for properly trained technical or advanced freediving teams.

Access Restrictions

Site access is typically controlled during daytime gate hours, and deeper arch profiles should only be attempted by appropriately trained teams with the right equipment and support.

Legal Notes

Expect a protected-area or national-park entrance fee at the Blue Hole gate. Confirm the current fee and any local site-control rules with your operator before travel.

Local Intel For Blue Hole

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

Most recreational scuba plans stay on the wall, use the saddle for entry or exit, or arrive on a guided Bells-to-Blue-Hole drift. Strict depth control and local route knowledge matter more here than raw swimming ability.

Freedive

Blue Hole is one of Dahab's best-known freedive venues because deep water sits close to shore and the interior surface is relatively sheltered. Freedive sessions should use formal supervision, safety divers, and conservative depth progression.

Snorkel

Snorkelers can enjoy the shallow reef edge and the area around the saddle close to shore, where coral growth and reef fish are visible without committing to a deep route. Avoid drifting onto the exposed outer wall in wind or current.
