Best by boat but possible from shore with a long swim, The Outpost shifts from sheltered inner reef to steeper outer structure with reserve-style fish encounters.

About The Outpost

The Outpost is a versatile Leigh reef dive that starts in a more sheltered bay and then stretches out toward steeper walls and deeper sand where fish life thickens around the structure. It is best reached by boat, but confident divers and spearfish-style swimmers also know it as a long surface-swim shore mission from Leigh. The appeal is the mix of easy inshore terrain, livelier outer structure, and classic Goat Island marine-reserve fish life, with snapper, rays, kingfish, blue maomao, and other northern temperate species using the reef and sand edge.

The Outpost Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Depth Note

Public site descriptions present The Outpost as a gradual progression from sheltered bay terrain to a steeper wall dropping toward sand, rather than a single fixed-depth feature.

Best Season

Dived year-round when visibility and swell suit the reserve, with the cleanest days generally linked to light offshore winds and low swell.

Typical Conditions

A mixed inshore-to-point reef route with reserve fish life, moderate shelter, and better comfort when wind and swell stay low.

Safety & Access At The Outpost

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Safety Notes

A shore dive involves a long surface swim.

Access Restrictions

Best accessed by boat from Leigh; shore access is possible but involves a long surface swim and is more committing than typical reserve entry points.

Legal Notes

The site sits inside the Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, so no fishing or collecting is allowed and marine life must not be disturbed.

Scuba

Boat diving is the easiest option because it removes the long surface swim and lets divers work from the bay toward the wall as conditions allow.
