Gerstle Cove State Park: protected cove for calm-day shore dives.
Gerstle Cove State Park: protected cove for calm-day shore dives.
Gerstle Cove State Park is a rocky North Coast cove inside Salt Point State Park, with shore access from the day-use area and parking above the beach. The entry is a short but rough shoreline approach over boulders, and the reserve pays off most on calm-swell days when the protected kelp, rocky reef, and tidepool habitat are easiest to work with. Plan a patient dive and keep the exit in mind before the water builds.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
3m - 15m
Depth Note
Shallow reserve water is roughly 10-30 ft, with the broader site reaching about 50 ft across the mouth and just outside the reserve.
Best Season
Late summer to fall, on calm swell windows.
Typical Conditions
Cold North Coast water, variable visibility, and a small cove that can be calm one day and surgey the next.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Watch the surf and do not force the entry or exit if swell builds. The rocks are slippery, and the cove can change quickly.
Access Restrictions
Use the day-use area and plan a rocky shore approach rather than an easy beach walk.
Legal Notes
State park day-use fees apply. The Gerstle Cove marine reserve is no-take, so take of living marine resources is prohibited inside the boundary.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Best for calm-day shore diving with a careful rocky entry and exit. The reserve rewards patient reef and kelp exploration.
Freediving
Freediving is most realistic on small-swell days when the cove is settled and the exit is predictable.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is only a marginal option and is best limited to the calmest, shallowest water near shore.
