Scuba
What It Feels Like
Scuba here is local, seasonal, and very Atlantic. Buceo Donosti operates from the San Sebastian and Pasaia side with sites around Mompas, Mount Ulia, Jaizkibel, and historic harbor approaches, while KSUB in Getaria is the natural gateway for dives around the Getaria headland. Getxo adds Bilbao-side training and boat options near the outer Port of Bilbao. Expect rocky reefs, gorgonians, octopus, conger eels, nudibranchs, and wreck fragments rather than tropical visibility.
Signature Sites
Start Here
One of the standout San Sebastian dives, close to Zurriola and the Mompas point, with shallow reef structure, surgeshaped rock, and a strong sense of open Bay of Biscay exposure.
A Mount Ulia and Pasaiaarea reef known for the quantity and size of its gorgonians, best booked when visibility and swell allow a quality wall or reef dive.
The San Anton headland is the visual icon of Getaria and a logical target for local KSUB outings when swell direction and boat access line up.
Level Up
Outer Port of Bilbao Breakwater
Getxobased operators use the Bilbaoside coast for training and local dives, especially around the outer port perimeter when boat navigation and sea state cooperate.
Advanced
A historic wreckassociated dive near the Pasaia mouth and Mount Ulia coastline, suited to divers who enjoy navigation, history, and local guide interpretation.
Planning Playbook
Operator Checklist
Reserve ahead in summer and reconfirm the day before. Bring proof of certification and dive insurance, plus your logbook if you want advanced or exposed sites. A 5mm to 7mm wetsuit, hooded vest, gloves, and booties are realistic for many divers, and drysuit divers will be happier outside high summer. Use an SMB, listen to local site briefings, and expect site swaps rather than cancellations whenever a protected alternative is safe.
