When to go

Best time to visit Basque Coast: San Sebastian, Getaria, Zumaia, and Getxo

The Basque Coast is usable yearround for food, culture, and scenic travel, but water activities are much easier from June to October.

Best overall window

June to October, with July to September easiest and September the best balance

Warmest water near 20°C to 22°C, active beach services, stronger boat schedules, and generally drier summer weather.

Outside that window

Mild but wetter Atlantic season, water often around 12°C to 15°C, more swelldriven cancellations, and better emphasis on food, museums, and city days.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

Always true for this destination
  • Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.
  • Visibility can swing more from day to day.
  • Crossings and exposed sites can feel rougher in this stretch.
Seasonal cautions
  • Jul to Aug: Peak Spanish and European holiday demand affects hotels, restaurants, beaches, parking, and popular tour departures.
  • Nov to Apr: Atlantic low-pressure systems can bring rain, swell, and short-notice water activity changes.
