Cold-water wrecks, sheltered sea-loch training, and island shore adventures within reach of Glasgow
The central risks are cold, variable visibility, current, weather, vessel traffic, restricted waters, difficult entries, and wreck entanglement. Safe planning is local and dynamic: verify tides, Met Office marine conditions, port and harbor notices, site access, team competence, and emergency communications every day. The Clyde's working-waterway status is as important as its natural environment. Conservation priorities are non-disturbance, responsible wildlife watching, clean and dry equipment, careful buoyancy, and full compliance with wreck law.
Use close team positioning in low visibility, stable propulsion over silt, and conservative turn pressures. Deploy a DSMB when the plan and local practice require it, but understand that a marker does not make surfacing into traffic safe. Do not enter wreck overheads without specialist training and configuration. Freedivers must use trained same-discipline buddies with active one-up, one-down supervision; snorkelers should remain near a simple exit.
Stop diving, administer the highest available concentration of oxygen, keep the diver at rest and protected from cold, and call 999 or 112 for HM Coastguard in a marine emergency. Contact the Scotland National Diving Accident Helpline for specialist coordination. Do not attempt in-water recompression or self-drive a seriously ill diver to a distant chamber.
Scotland's hyperbaric medicine pathway is coordinated nationally rather than through a chamber beside Loch Long. NHS National Services Scotland commissions services, and emergency teams determine the appropriate receiving facility according to symptoms, chamber capability, transport, and weather. The British Hyperbaric Association's Scotland National Diving Accident Helpline provides 24-hour specialist advice. DAN Europe can support members and other callers with diving-medicine assistance, but it does not replace 999 or 112 in an immediate emergency. Keep oxygen, first-aid training, exact site coordinates, road access details, and a means of calling for help within the group plan.
Cold water and post-dive cooling
Water can be around 6°C near the annual low and remains cold even at the late-summer maximum. Plan thermal protection, warm surface intervals, dry clothing, hydration, and an early end point before dexterity or judgment declines.
Low visibility and silt
Plankton, rain, freshwater, mud, fin contact, and vessel movement can reduce visibility quickly. Keep teams close, carry lights and a compass, use stable propulsion, and agree lost-buddy and separation procedures before entry.
Tides and strong current
Great Cumbrae reefs and Clyde wrecks can run hard outside slack. Obtain site-specific tide guidance, use the correct reference port, and abandon a plan if the predicted or observed flow exceeds the team's training and equipment.
Working port and shipping environment
The Clyde carries commercial, ferry, naval, fishing, and leisure traffic. Review Clydeport notices, maintain an effective lookout and surface-marking plan, and stay clear of channels, berths, terminals, moorings, and active operations.
Follow the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code from shore, boat, and in the water. Slow down, maintain space, avoid encircling animals, never block a seal or cetacean's route, and let wildlife control the encounter. Do not advertise seasonal basking-shark possibility as a guarantee or pursue an animal for a closer image.
Use good buoyancy and non-silting propulsion around mud, reef, wrecks, and monitoring stations. Secure gauges and alternate air sources, avoid contact with anemones and hydroids, and do not collect living material. Clean, drain, and dry suits, boots, DSMBs, lines, and boats between water bodies to reduce invasive-species transfer.
Leave artifacts and structural material in place. If wreck material is brought ashore, report it to the Receiver of Wreck within 28 days. Protected or controlled sites may require authorization, and archaeological work should use an approved project design rather than recreational recovery.
