Cold-water wrecks, sheltered sea-loch training, and island shore adventures within reach of Glasgow
Pick an activity mode to compare signature sites, skill fit, and gear planning notes before you lock your trip.
Scuba here is a cold-water skills destination with unusual breadth. Start at A-Frames in Finnart for sheltered shore practice, move to Loch Long slopes and walls, then use a Dunoon operator such as Wreckspeditions for tide-managed Clyde wrecks and reefs. The region rewards drysuit control, navigation, torch use, patient macro observation, and disciplined gas planning more than a chase for consistently clear water.
Finnart's bestknown shore dive uses old pier and frame structures as navigation and training features.
A relatively sheltered Loch Long shore option where a boulder slope and crevices create habitat for conger eels and smaller coldwater life down toward about {{ 30 | distance:m }}.
A Great Cumbrae shore dive linking a shallow bay, reef, wall, and anchor features.
A deeper Loch Long reefandwall dive with a profile from roughly {{ 5 | distance:m }} to {{ 35 | distance:m }}, dark or lowvisibility conditions, and an entry that raises the physical and procedural demands.
An advanced Clyde wreck objective extending from about {{ 8 | distance:m }} toward {{ 50 | distance:m }}.
Operator Checklist
Reserve charters early for summer weekends, but keep site choice flexible until the operator reviews wind, tide, visibility, and port activity. For shore days, confirm parking and access, arrive early, protect changing areas from traffic, and bring a method to contain wet equipment. Cylinders and weights are easiest to arrange through a local center or club. Never remove wreck material. Any recovered wreck item must be reported to the Receiver of Wreck within 28 days, and protected sites may require authorization.
