Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.
The Isles of Scilly are reached from Cornwall and southwest England by fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter or passenger ferry.
A scuba group carrying cylinders, weight systems or large camera cases will usually find the ferry's baggage model easier, but current rules and container procedures must be checked directly. All three modes can be disrupted by Atlantic weather. Add a mainland buffer before a fixed charter start and avoid a tight same-day international connection on the return.

The islands' fixed-wing gateway, served by Skybus from Land's End, Newquay and Exeter. The current carrier route page lists all three as year-round, but operating days and frequency must be checked in the live timetable. Small-aircraft baggage restrictions matter for dive equipment.

Walking is the default on the compact islands. St Mary's adds taxis, a seasonal bus and bicycle hire; Tresco is well suited to bicycles and hired golf buggies under local rules. Inter-island tripper boats are the essential network for off-island accommodation and day trips. Schedules respond to tide, weather and demand, so confirm the last return before starting a long walk. There is no mainland-style islandwide rideshare system, and private-car use is limited by island size and access.
Travel from mainland Great Britain to the Isles of Scilly is domestic, so there is no separate island immigration process. Carriers may still require approved identification. International visitors must first satisfy current United Kingdom passport, visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation rules for their nationality and trip purpose. British and Irish citizens and other exempt categories do not need an ETA. Check the official GOV.UK visa and ETA tools close to departure because eligibility and fees can change.
Treat dive equipment as a separate transport project.
Pound Sterling (GBP)
Cards are widely useful for accommodation, food and booked activities, but small operators, temporary signal loss and off-island days make a cash backup sensible. Costs trend premium because every visitor depends on sea or air transport and specialist dive capacity is scarce.
Plan primary cash access on St Mary's, including the Post Office's listed cash services. Do not assume every off-island community has an ATM or that mobile connectivity will support a card terminal at all times.
230V • 50Hz • G
United Kingdom Type G sockets are standard. Bring a UK adapter and verify that chargers are rated for 230V. Camera and light users should pack a compact power strip only if the accommodation permits it and should not leave lithium batteries charging unattended.
Communications
Mobile reception and data performance vary by island, cove and provider. Accommodation Wi-Fi is common but should not be treated as guaranteed expedition connectivity. Download certification cards, tide tables, operator contacts, maps and transport details before leaving the mainland. Tell a shore contact the day's water plan and carry a charged phone in a waterproof case where coverage allows, while relying on the boat's marine communications offshore.
Language
English is the working language for transport, dive briefings, medical care and visitor services. Maritime vocabulary, island names and local boat arrangements can be unfamiliar, so repeat back pickup quay, departure time and return island during every booking.
Insurance
Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers scuba to the planned maximum depth, wreck activity where applicable, freediving if undertaken, medical evacuation, missed connections and weather-related interruption. Confirm whether cancellation caused by the operator or carrier is handled by the supplier, insurer or neither. A European or UK health entitlement is not a substitute for specialist diving and repatriation cover.
