Cold-water wrecks, jewel-anemone walls and grey seals beyond Land's End
Overview
The Isles of Scilly combine dense maritime history with unusually varied British cold-water diving. Qualified groups book the local day-charter boat Morvoren for wrecks such as MV Cita and King Cadwallon, jewel-anemone walls such as Dave's Crack, and shallow grey-seal encounters around the Eastern Isles. HMS Colossus adds a carefully managed archaeological trail, but it is a Protected Wreck Site and may be visited only under licence.
This is not a spontaneous walk-in dive destination. Capacity is scarce, tides and Atlantic weather drive the site list, and a planned five-day charter can include swaps or lost days. May to September is the dependable core, with June to September best for casual snorkeling and self-organized freedive practice. Ferry, Skybus and helicopter links all reach the islands, but fog, wind and sea state can affect every route. The reward is a small-group expedition with colorful reefs, photogenic wreckage, wildlife-rich surface intervals and excellent non-diver island hopping.
Modern cargo wrecks, historic steamers and a licensed Royal Navy archaeology trail give a rare range of structures within one small archipelago.
Granite walls, crevices, pinnacles and gullies are known for jewel anemones, dead man's fingers and productive macro photography.
Shallow Eastern Isles sites support guided snorkel trips and possible in-water encounters with wild Atlantic grey seals.
