What It Feels Like

Kefalonia is an Ionian geology and wreck destination. From Fiskardo, short boat rides reach caverns, cliffs, seagrass meadows, and WWII remains; from Skala, divers can plan Mediterranean reefs, Kakava Shoals, and the serious HMS Perseus submarine wreck. It is not a coral-garden destination, but the visibility, blue light, limestone shapes, and history give it a distinctive Greek identity.

Signature Sites

Start Here

  • Sponge Walls

A macrofriendly wall with crevices, sponges, small invertebrates, and Mediterranean fish life, especially rewarding for photographers who slow down.

Advanced

  • HMS Perseus

The island's headline deep wreck, a WWII British submarine resting upright near {{ 52 | distance:m }} off the south coast.

  • Blue Canyon

A Lassiarea wall and canyon profile for experienced recreational divers who want bluewater limestone topography, small caves, and a dramatic vertical feel.

  • The Temple

A Fiskardoarea cavern and geology dive that captures the north island style: clear water, limestone forms, arches, and careful finning in overheadadjacent terrain.

Planning Playbook

Operator Checklist

Reserve deep wreck dives early and expect operators to check certification, recent experience, gas planning, and weather. For regular two-tank days, choose your base by the sites you want: Fiskardo for caverns and north coast geology, Skala for HMS Perseus and Kakava-area dives, Lassi or Lixouri for easier central access. Carry proof of certification, ask about nitrox before arrival, and leave a minimum surface interval before flying from EFL. Do not remove artifacts, shells, or wreck material.
