Overview

Ionian wrecks, blue caverns, turtle harbors, and mountain days in one Greek island trip

Kefalonia is a local-operator island, not a liveaboard destination. Divers plan around day boats from Fiskardo, Skala, Lassi, Lixouri, Agia Efimia, and nearby harbors, mixing clear-water reefs, caverns, walls, amphora fields, and the advanced HMS Perseus submarine wreck. Snorkelers get easy turquoise coves such as Emblissi, Foki, Antisamos, Koutsoupia, Spartia, and Skala, while freedivers can find calm training-friendly bays when wind and boat traffic are managed. Non-divers are unusually well served: Melissani and Drogarati caves, Mount Ainos National Park, Robola wineries, Assos, Myrtos, Argostoli turtle watching, and small-harbor dining can fill a whole itinerary. Late May to October is the main water season, with September and early October often the best balance of warm sea, softer crowds, and good operator access.

What Makes It Special

  • Local day-boat flexibility

The destination is built around shore-access coves, short boat runs, and local dive centers rather than liveaboard itineraries.

  • Wreck plus cavern mix

Advanced divers can target HMS Perseus, while recreational divers still get walls, caverns, reefs, seagrass, and smaller wrecks.

  • Clear Ionian water

Northern operators report visibility that can reach 40 m in season, with April water around 19°C and August water around 28°C.

  • Strong non-diver pairing

Melissani Cave, Drogarati Cave, Mount Ainos, Myrtos, Assos, Robola wineries, and Argostoli harbor make the island easy for couples or families with mixed water interests.

Best time to go

Late May to October, with September to early October the easiest balance

Warm sea, softer crowds, good dive and snorkel access, and comfortable land touring; late October can bring more showers.

Main caution: Locallife and hiking months rather than reliable divetrip months, with wetter weather, rougher seas, and fewer tourism services.
