When to go

Best time to visit Kos

Kos is a warmseason dive and snorkel island.

Best overall window

May to October

Warm sea, active beach season, broadest dive and snorkel schedules; July and August can be windy and hot.

Outside that window

Winter is best treated as a quiet culture and nature trip, with cooler water, windier seas and fewer wateractivity departures.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

Regional timing around Kos

These regional shifts apply only to the selected scope.

AreaBest monthsWhy it changes
Southwest coast: Kefalos, Agios Stefanos and Kastri

June to October

This is the easiest zone for beginner dives, family snorkel days and short boat runs when the summer wind is manageable.

Main caution: Peak holiday weeks feel busier and book faster.

North coast: Tigaki, Marmari and Lambi

May to June and September to October

Great for beaches, bikes and families, but north or northwest wind can make selfguided snorkeling less comfortable in peak summer.

Main caution: Surface chop can add a little more texture on exposed entries.

Pserimos and Nisyros boat routes

June to September

Addon wreck, amphora or volcano days need a stable forecast and may not run every day.

Main caution: Same-day route swaps become more likely when weather builds.

Wildlife goals and seasonal highlights

These do not replace the overall planner. Use them only if a specific animal or event is driving your trip dates.

Always true for this destination
  • Sun exposure stays high even when conditions are easy.
  • Wind Exposed Departures.
  • For most divers and snorkelers, the smartest pick is September or early October.
Seasonal cautions
  • Jul to Aug: Peak summer brings the warmest beach scene, but Meltemi winds and holiday demand can affect exposed departures.
  • Dec to Mar: Winter is more suitable for culture and nature than for reliable boat-based water planning.
