Overview

Volcanic Aegean reefs, easy training bays and Hippocratic island culture

Kos is a land-based Aegean dive and snorkel island rather than a liveaboard destination. The best underwater days run from May to October, when local boats work rocky reefs, arches, small caverns, amphora routes near Pserimos and the Thor Star wreck. Beginners get shallow, clear training water around Kastri and Agios Stefanos, while Open Water and Advanced divers can add walls, drift sections and the Pserimos wreck route when weather cooperates. Snorkelers do well from Agios Stefanos, Paradise Beach, Camel Beach and guided boat trips to Kastri, Three Rocks and Krikelos. Above water, Kos is unusually strong for non-divers: the Asclepieion, Kos Town archaeology, bike lanes, thermal springs, wetlands, Zia sunsets and day trips to Nisyros make it easy to mix water time with culture.

What Makes It Special

  • Beginner-friendly Aegean

Shallow bays around Kastri, Agios Stefanos and Psalidi let new divers and snorkelers sample clear Aegean water without committing to remote boat logistics.

  • Volcanic rock and amphora routes

Kos and nearby Pserimos mix rocky reefs, small caverns, sponge-covered walls and protected pottery fields, giving dives a strong Greek island identity.

  • Thor Star wreck option

The Thor Star off Pserimos is the signature wreck day for certified divers, with shallow sections and a deeper stern near recreational limits.

  • Snorkel from beach or boat

Agios Stefanos, Paradise Beach, Camel Beach and guided boat routes to Kastri, Three Rocks and Krikelos make Kos unusually flexible for snorkelers.
