Most travelers fly into Marsa Alam International Airport in Port Ghalib, then transfer by road to Port Ghalib resorts, Marsa Alam town, Abu Dabbab, or one of the south-coast dive camps. Current airport schedules show a mix of Cairo and Hurghada domestic links plus direct European flights on carriers such as Egyptair, Air Cairo, Eurowings, Smartwings, easyJet Europe, Wizz Air, TUI Fly Netherlands, CHAIR, and Neos. From the airport, Abu Dabbab is about 30 km south, while Elphinstone is reached by day boat from Port Ghalib, Marsa Shagra, Marsa Nakari, and nearby resort jetties.

The main gateway for the south Red Sea, with current schedules linking Cairo, Hurghada, and multiple European cities. Port Ghalib sits next to the airport, so arrival-day logistics are easier here than on longer Red Sea road transfers.
Transport: Pre-booked resort transfer, Private car, Taxi, Car rental
Private resort transfers are the default and usually the smoothest option. Taxis and rental cars exist, but the south Red Sea is spread out enough that pre-booked transport is often worth the extra cost. If you are staying near Port Ghalib, marina dining and airport logistics are easy. If you stay farther south for house-reef access, expect longer runs for marina nights but shorter starts for shore entries and dive-camp life.
Visa rules depend on passport nationality, so check the official Egypt e-Visa portal first. The official online system currently lists a single-entry tourist e-Visa at USD $25 and a multiple-entry tourist e-Visa at USD $60, and advises applying at least 7 days before travel. At Marsa Alam airport, foreign currency above USD $10,000 must be declared. If you are carrying cameras, dive computers, or lithium-heavy charging kits, pack them in a way that makes security inspection simple.
This is a destination where oversize baggage planning pays off. The airport separates large items at check-in, and many divers arrive with long-fin bags, camera cases, or wing systems. Abu Dabbab advertises compressor support, dive gear, lockers, and beach-day facilities, while resort operations farther south are used to cylinders, repeated shore sessions, and rinse logistics. For Elphinstone, clip loose accessories, label your SMB, and keep thermal and wind layers accessible for the surface interval.

Cards are common at bigger resorts, Port Ghalib businesses, and established dive operators, but cash still matters for tips, taxis, roadside stops, and smaller purchases away from the main resort corridor.
ATMs are easiest to find around Port Ghalib, the airport zone, Marsa Alam town, and major resort compounds. Carry enough cash before heading south toward Wadi El Gemal or remote camps.

Communications
Mobile data and hotel Wi-Fi are usually strongest around Port Ghalib and the main resort strip. Coverage becomes patchier in Wadi El Gemal and is naturally unreliable offshore, so download maps, insurance numbers, and transfer contacts before long boat or desert days. eSIMs generally work well for short trips.
Language
Arabic is the main local language. English is widely used in resorts, marina businesses, and dive centers, and the flight mix means you will also hear plenty of German, Italian, Czech, and other European languages around south Red Sea operations.
Insurance
Carry both general travel insurance and dive-specific accident cover that includes chamber treatment and evacuation. This matters most for Elphinstone itineraries, camera-heavy trips, and any schedule with repeated boat diving.
Packing list
Pack for sun, wind, and salt rather than only for water temperature. A 3mm suit is fine for much of the year, while many divers prefer 5mm in winter or on windy boat days. Add an SMB, whistle, reef-safe sun protection, hat, sunglasses, dry bag, and a light wind layer for surface intervals and desert evenings.
