When To Go

Season planner for Monterey Bay

Monterey Bay is a year-round destination, but conditions change fast with swell, wind, and runoff. Fall (Sep to Nov) is often the easiest all-around window: calmer swell periods, clearer days, and water that can feel closest to its yearly high around 14°C to 15°C. Winter (Dec to Mar) brings the biggest Pacific swells and more rain, so shore plans need flexibility, but calm gaps between storms can deliver excellent visibility. Spring and early summer bring upwelling, windier afternoons, and colder water that can sit near 12°C.

Ideal: Often the best blend of manageable surf, stable conditions, and decent visibility for shore dives and Point Lobos days.

Plan Carefully: Larger swell and storm cycles. Dive only when conditions are clearly favorable and prefer protected coves and conservative exits.

Point Lobos requires reservations and limits daily dive teams, so it can be prime even when Monterey sites are stirred up.

Ideal: Warmest water of the year (still cold), often calmer mornings, and good windows for kelp exploration and line sessions.

Plan Carefully: Winter swell and cold water raise risk. Choose only very calm days and avoid steep beaches with shorebreak.

Freediving is highly conditiondependent in Monterey.

Ideal: Best odds for calmer seas and the warmest water of the year. Protected coves are still the safest choice.

Plan Carefully: Winter swell and runoff can reduce visibility and increase hazards. Choose non-ocean alternatives if surf is up.

Snorkeling success depends on choosing calm days and sheltered coves like Lovers Point.
