Cold-water clarity, four wrecks, and a sunken city at the gateway to the Harz
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers sourced from research and local operating patterns.
Scuba is available year-round because Action Sport Nordhausen keeps the base open in every season, but May to October is the easiest range for most visitors. June to September gives longer days, warmer surface intervals, and the best balance with Harz activities. In July 2026, reported water was about 19°C at the surface and 15°C at 20 m. Winter can still produce rewarding clear-water dives, but it should be planned as a specialist cold-water trip with reduced opening hours, robust thermal protection, conservative profiles, and winter road awareness.
Yes, provided the diver has at least an Open Water certification, a valid medical-fitness document, suitable cold-water equipment, and an appropriate buddy or instructor. Entry 1 has shallow training platforms around and , and Charlotte I lies around to and is described by the operator as beginner-friendly. The lake still demands precise buoyancy, compass awareness, and thermal discipline. Beginners should avoid wreck or Nordhusia penetration, deep platforms, and complex routes until they have the relevant experience and specialty training.
Water temperature varies sharply by season and depth. A May 2026 operator report showed about 8°C to 10°C at the surface and about 5°C at 20 m. A July 2026 report showed roughly 19°C at the surface and 15°C at 20 m. Those snapshots are not guarantees, but they demonstrate why a warm air temperature can be misleading. Most visiting divers should bring a drysuit or a well-fitted 7mm system, hood, gloves, cold-water regulators, and warm surface clothing.
The operator commonly describes year-round visibility of about 10 m to 15 m, and 2026 condition reports recorded up to about 15 m at several depths. Visibility is still local and changeable. Rain, seasonal turnover, algae, busy classes, and a single team finning in fine sediment can reduce it around entries, platforms, wrecks, and bays. Check the most recent condition report before travel, use horizontal trim, keep distance from the bottom, and plan a compass-based exit that remains workable if the clear view disappears.
Nordhusia is a purpose-built underwater interpretation of Nordhausen's former imperial city. Its main elements lie around 10 m to 12 m and include half-timbered facades, walls, a tower, cemetery features, and a church with interior details. The installation also functions as habitat for fish, crayfish, mussels, and sponges. Qualified Open Water divers can enjoy a careful exterior circuit in suitable conditions. Doorways and enclosed sections create an overhead environment, so penetration requires appropriate training, configuration, lights, gas planning, and a local briefing. Freedivers should remain outside every structure.
There is no marine-park tag or destination tourism levy in the reviewed sources, but the lake is managed access rather than open public shore diving. Every diver must check in with Action Sport Nordhausen, obtain permission, and pay the published day fee, currently EUR 17. The base can inspect certification, a valid medical-fitness document, and the logbook. Only marked entries may be used. Additional charges apply for fills, nitrox, rentals, camping, or instruction. Prices and hours can change, so reconfirm them directly before travel, especially for groups, night dives, or winter visits.
Prioritize cold-water reliability: a drysuit or seasonally adequate 7mm system, hood, gloves, cold-water regulators, computer, compass, primary light, backup light, and a cutting device. The operator recommends redundant independently closable first stages for cold-water diving. Bring certification cards, a valid medical-fitness document, logbook, and dive-insurance details. Action Sport Nordhausen offers air, nitrox, cylinders, regulators, suits, computers, and lights, but asks visitors to reserve rental equipment at least one week ahead. Personal compressors are not allowed, and cylinders should have current inspections and compatible DIN fittings.
Yes, the lake has hosted organized apnea activity, including the VDST Apnoe Happening in late June 2025, and specialist providers have advertised open-water courses there. The main facility is scuba-oriented, so contact the base before travel to agree on access, entry, line placement, surface marking, and separation from scuba traffic. Use a trained safety partner, one-up, one-down supervision, a bright buoy, a weighted line, and a lanyard where appropriate. Do not freedive alone or enter wrecks or Nordhusia. June to September is the practical window, but cold depth water remains a hazard.
Non-divers can use the lakeside base, and the operator publishes a EUR 4 day fee, with children up to age 12 free. Swimming is unguarded and at the visitor's own risk. Ask staff which shallow areas are open and remain clear of scuba entries, training lines, buoys, rowboats, and SUP traffic. July to September offers the best chance of comfortable snorkeling, but a wetsuit and bright float are still sensible. Casual snorkelers should focus on shallow vegetation and fish rather than trying to reach attractions at 6 m or deeper. Non-swimmers need a personal flotation device.
The simplest option is the on-site campground at Action Sport Nordhausen, where divers stay close to entries, fills, showers, power, and equipment tables. Published charges combine a per-person fee with a tent or motorhome pitch. Individual pitches are not reserved, while groups of more than 10 should contact the operator. There is no electric-vehicle charging at the campground. Hotels and pensions in Nordhausen provide more dining and city access, but ask about wet-gear storage and drying. A two- or three-night stay supports two dive days plus one Harz, museum, or memorial day.
Take a train to Nordhausen Hauptbahnhof, then use a pre-booked taxi or arranged pickup to reach Action Sport Nordhausen at Uthleber Weg 27. Public transport is useful for central Nordhausen and the Harz railway, but the final lake connection and movement of cylinders, drysuits, and camping gear make a car much easier. From Leipzig/Halle Airport, rail itineraries normally require a change through Halle and then a taxi from Nordhausen. From Erfurt-Weimar Airport, connections are possible but less direct. Confirm the last transfer before departure and avoid arriving after the dive base closes.
Action Sport Nordhausen states that an emergency phone, oxygen, first-aid equipment, and staff able to start the rescue chain are on site. Call 112 for a life-threatening emergency. Südharz Klinikum Nordhausen has a 24-hour emergency department, but the reviewed sources do not confirm a hyperbaric chamber at the lake or hospital. For suspected decompression illness, serious barotrauma, immersion pulmonary edema, or neurological symptoms, give oxygen, call 112, and contact DAN Europe at +39 06 4211 5685. Emergency services should select the receiving facility and transport method rather than the team driving independently.
