Cold-water clarity, four wrecks, and a sunken city at the gateway to the Harz
Sundhäuser See is a managed cold-water freshwater site with on-site staff, emergency oxygen, first aid, and clear operating rules. Its principal risks are cold, regulator free-flow, navigation, silt, overhead structures, and shared-water traffic rather than current or ocean swell. Conservation depends on using marked entries, protecting vegetation, avoiding sediment damage, and treating installations as habitat rather than playground equipment.
Check in with the base and follow staff instructions. Independent scuba divers need at least Open Water certification, a valid medical-fitness document, and equipment suitable for cold freshwater. Use a computer and compass, stay within training and depth limits, and reserve decompression diving for appropriately qualified technical teams. The operator recommends full cold-water equipment and redundant independently closable first stages. Do not enter Nordhusia or wreck interiors without overhead or wreck training, lights, appropriate gas rules, and a planned exit. Maintain horizontal trim around fine sediment, monitor thermal stress continuously, and surface early if dexterity, breathing, awareness, or regulator behavior changes. Notify the base immediately after any incident.
The dive base maintains an emergency phone, oxygen, first-aid equipment, and staff who can start the rescue chain. Call 112 for a life-threatening emergency. Südharz Klinikum in Nordhausen has a 24-hour emergency department, but the reviewed sources do not confirm a hyperbaric chamber at the lake or hospital. For suspected decompression illness, immersion pulmonary edema, serious barotrauma, or unexplained neurological symptoms, provide oxygen, call 112, and contact DAN Europe for dive-medicine coordination. Do not drive a symptomatic diver to an unknown chamber; emergency services should determine destination and transport.
Cold water and regulator free-flow
Depth water can remain very cold even when summer surface readings are comfortable. Use cold-water regulators, adequate exposure protection, conservative turn pressures, and a plan for rapid post-dive warming. The operator recommends redundant independently closable first stages for cold-water reliability.
Thermocline and post-dive cooling
A warm surface can conceal a much colder working depth. Monitor dexterity, breathing rate, and team comfort, shorten dives before impairment, and protect the surface interval from wind and wet-suit cooling.
Silt and localized visibility loss
Fine sediment around bays, wrecks, platforms, and structures can turn a clear route into a low-visibility exit. Maintain horizontal trim, avoid standing or kneeling, and leave extra distance behind training groups.
Confusing former-extraction terrain
Ridges, depressions, and abrupt changes of direction can make a direct return less obvious than the map suggests. Carry a compass, note depth contours, and use conservative route lengths on the first dive.
Use only marked entries and never cross shore reinforcement or closed banks. Keep fins above the bottom, avoid grabbing vegetation, and do not remove animals, plants, fixtures, or artifacts. Nordhusia was built with environmentally compatible materials and functions as habitat for fish, crayfish, mussels, and sponges, so treat every structure as living substrate. Rinse equipment in the lake only where the operator permits rather than using guest showers as gear-wash stations. Remove all rubbish, keep dogs leashed, and follow staff directions on scooters, boats, SUPs, group training, and access closures.
