Nordhausen is reached most easily by road. Drivers approaching on the A38 leave for Nordhausen, follow the B4 toward the city, then use the operator's final approach to Uthleber Weg 27 beside Sundhäuser See. Rail travelers arrive at Nordhausen Hauptbahnhof and need a taxi, local pickup, or rental car for the final lake transfer. A car is strongly preferable for teams carrying cylinders, drysuits, and camping gear. From outside Germany, Erfurt-Weimar is the nearest airport, while Leipzig/Halle offers a broader rail-and-road alternative. Always check live road and rail notices because construction and timetable changes are common.

A car is the practical default. It simplifies airport arrival, the last leg from Nordhausen, cylinders, camping equipment, and side trips into the Harz. Taxis can connect Nordhausen station and the lake, but pre-booking is sensible for early starts or large gear bags. Public transport may work for the city and Harz railway, but it is not an efficient substitute for a dive vehicle at the waterfront. Cyclists should confirm a secure place for equipment and avoid transporting filled cylinders without an appropriate vehicle setup.
Germany is in the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens can normally enter with a valid national identity card or passport. Many other nationalities can visit the Schengen Area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while others need a Schengen visa before travel. Rules depend on nationality, residence status, purpose, and travel history. Check the German Federal Foreign Office and the EU Schengen entry pages for the travel date, and carry a travel document valid for the applicable stay and border rules. Diving access is separate: the lake operator requires check-in, a valid medical-fitness document, and suitable certification.
Action Sport Nordhausen provides 200 bar air, nitrox up to 40%, cylinder rental, cold-water regulators, exposure suits, computers, lights, weights, and other equipment. Reserve rentals at least one week ahead. Personal compressors are not allowed at the site. Bring current cylinder inspections and compatible DIN fittings, label team equipment, and separate wet gear from passenger luggage. On-site camping keeps equipment near entries and fills; hotel guests should confirm drying and storage arrangements. Airlines and rail operators set their own baggage rules, so remove cylinders' valves only when required by the carrier and never travel with a pressurized cylinder.

Germany uses the euro. Card acceptance varies, so carry some cash for small campground charges, shower tokens, local kiosks, or any base terminal outage. Confirm accepted payment methods with the dive center before arrival.
Bank ATMs are available in Nordhausen. Withdraw cash in town rather than relying on an ATM at the lakeside base, where ATM availability is not confirmed in the reviewed sources.

The PADI listing for the base includes Wi-Fi. German mobile networks and EU roaming generally support navigation and messaging, but signal strength can vary around lakes, forests, and Harz valleys. Download the dive map, emergency numbers, hotel details, and railway tickets before leaving town. International visitors can use a German or EU eSIM if their home plan does not include roaming.
Language
German is the local language. The PADI dive-center profile lists both German and English, but not every staff member, medical responder, or local business is guaranteed to provide full English service. Learn basic dive and emergency terms, and request an English briefing or instructor when booking rather than on arrival.
Insurance
Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers scuba or freediving to the planned depth and activity type, including freshwater diving, emergency medical transport, hyperbaric treatment, search and rescue, and repatriation. Technical diving, decompression, overhead penetration, and solo or self-reliant profiles often need extra wording. An EHIC or GHIC can support medically necessary public care for eligible European travelers, but it does not replace dive-accident, evacuation, cancellation, or liability cover. DAN or an equivalent diving policy is strongly recommended.
