Overview
Northern Sardinia pairs two of the Mediterranean's most photogenic protected seascapes. La Maddalena offers wind-carved granite, gorgonian walls, swim-through terrain, and clear-water shoals reached from Palau or La Maddalena town. Tavolara and Molara add steep limestone, coralligenous reefs, Posidonia, large grouper, barracuda, and tightly managed buoyed sites from Porto San Paolo or the Olbia coast.
This is a land-based, day-boat destination rather than a liveaboard trip. A split stay is the cleanest plan because the two park systems have different operators, permits, and weather fallbacks. May to October is the broad scuba season, with June and September offering the best balance of warm water, reliable schedules, and fewer peak-summer crowds. July and August are warmest but expensive and busy. The Mistral and local currents can still force site changes, so book an authorized operator and treat the published site list as an ambition, not a guarantee.
