When to go

Best time to visit Okinawa

Okinawa is genuinely year round for diving, but your experience shifts with the seasons.

Best overall window

April to June, plus October and November

Warm air around 24°C to 28°C, water near 24°C to 27°C, generally good visibility and fewer domestic crowds outside Golden Week, though late May and early June can be rainy.

Outside that window

Hottest months with water up to about 29°C and peak beach weather, but also the highest frequency of typhoons that can cancel flights, ferries, and marine excursions for several days.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

Always true for this destination
  • Japanese holidays such as Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon (mid August), and New Year see spikes in domestic visitors and pricing.
Seasonal cautions
  • Dec to Mar, Jul: Cooler winter air around 18°C to 20°C with water near 21°C to 23°C in January to March, but whales and hammerheads offshore; July offers hot air, warm water, and busy boats that can still run many days despite occasional storms.
  • Aug to Sep: Hottest months with water up to about 29°C and peak beach weather, but also the highest frequency of typhoons that can cancel flights, ferries, and marine excursions for several days.
