Dive black-lava walls, ancient amphora trails, and wind-shaped coves on Sicily's volcanic outpost
Pantelleria's main risks are environmental and logistical rather than exotic: wind, current, surge, rough lava entries, remote coves, summer heat, and transport disruption. The island has a hospital with emergency services and a listed hyperbaric facility, but visitors should verify chamber readiness before relying on it and carry insurance that covers evacuation to a larger Sicilian center.
Conservation extends across terrestrial national-park habitats, Posidonia and reef communities, and exceptional underwater archaeology. Good conduct means no collection, no artifact contact, no anchoring or fin damage in seagrass, no waste, and no pressure on a guide to enter a closed or unsuitable site.
Dive with a qualified local operator and accept coast or site changes. Exposed shoals can carry strong current, walls can encourage accidental depth, and wind can complicate pickup or the return to a lava entry. Use a computer, make conservative gas and no-decompression decisions, carry a delayed surface marker buoy, and maintain direct buddy contact.
Share medical history honestly and provide any clearance the center requests. Build an appropriate surface interval, respect flying-after-diving guidance from your training and insurer, and avoid strenuous hiking or very hot geothermal bathing soon after dives. Freedivers must use trained, close supervision and one-up, one-down procedures. Snorkelers should not convert a casual swim into unsupervised breath-hold depth attempts.
B. Nagar Hospital in Pantelleria lists an emergency department, radiology, and a hyperbaric service. Island capacity can change because staffing, maintenance, weather, and case complexity affect what can be treated locally. Before a dive trip, ask the operator when the chamber was last confirmed operational and how an injured diver would be transferred if escalation were required.
Call 112 for a general emergency and 1530 for maritime rescue. Give the cove name, nearest road access, GPS position when available, number of patients, and whether the incident involves diving. Start oxygen and first aid within the limits of training, preserve the dive computer, and contact the travel or dive insurer promptly. Do not delay emergency care to seek informal online advice.
Wind can invalidate a famous site
Do not pressure a skipper, guide, or swimming partner to keep a planned site when the lee coast has changed. Expect substitutions and occasional cancellations.
Lava entries punish poor footwear
Rock shelves can be sharp, hot, wet, polished, or wave-washed. Wear secure water shoes or dive booties and keep both hands available during the entry and exit.
Arches and natural pools amplify swell
Arco dell'Elefante and Laghetto delle Ondine are not protected swimming pools. Breaking water can funnel, rebound, and wash swimmers or walkers onto lava.
Very hot bathing does not mix well with scuba recovery
Heat and dehydration add physiological stress after diving. Keep thermal basins and natural saunas for a non-dive day and discuss individual medical risks with a qualified clinician.
Pantelleria Island National Park protects terrestrial geology, vegetation, agriculture, and cultural landscapes. A marine protected area has been under development, so visitors should check current zoning and notices rather than assuming the sea is unregulated.
Underwater archaeological routes are protected cultural property. Never touch, lift, move, scrub, or collect amphorae, anchors, pottery, or wreck material. Maintain neutral buoyancy and follow the certified guide's route. Around natural habitats, avoid finning into Posidonia, feeding fish, taking organisms, leaving line or plastic, and using anchors where they can damage seabed habitat.
At Specchio di Venere and other sensitive land sites, obey access and equipment restrictions, do not use soap, stay off fragile vegetation, and remove all waste. At geothermal sites, distance protects both the visitor and delicate formations.
