Overview
Pantelleria is a volcanic Mediterranean island where steep basalt walls, offshore secche, sheltered coves, and protected archaeological routes create a compact but varied water trip. The headline season runs from June through October, when local centers operate most consistently, water is warmest, and visibility can exceed 30 m. Wind still controls the daily plan, so good operators choose the lee coast rather than promising a fixed site.
Cala Gadir adds an unusual dimension: certified guides can lead divers through shallow Punic and Roman remains, while snorkelers can view parts of the archaeological landscape without descending deep. Around the island, grouper, amberjack, bream, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, gorgonians, sponges, and Posidonia meadows reward patient observation.
This is not a polished beach-resort destination. Entries are commonly over lava, transport is essential, and many coves have no lifeguard or services.
