May through September is the most practical dive window, with June through August easiest for a first charter because daylight is long and boat schedules are most dependable. Late summer usually brings the warmest water, around 13°C to 14°C, while April and October can still work for experienced cold-water teams. No month guarantees a named site: Atlantic wind, swell, tide and harbor traffic can force substitutions. From November through March, water can approach 5°C to 6°C, daylight is short and transport disruption becomes a much larger planning factor.

Official destination guidance places midwinter water near 5°C to 6°C and late-summer water near 13°C to 14°C. Most visiting scuba divers should use a well-fitting drysuit, warm layered undersuit, thick hood and cold-water gloves. Test the full system before the trip, including valve reach and buoyancy with the planned cylinders. Freedivers and snorkelers need similarly serious thermal protection, shorter sessions and immediate rewarming. A wetsuit does not remove cold-shock risk. Bring spare seals or a repair plan because a small drysuit failure can end several charter days.

Shetland has some shallow profiles, including parts of MV Pionersk near the surface and the Queen of Sweden around 18 m, but the destination as a whole is better for intermediate and advanced divers. Cold water, drysuit loading, boat ladders, variable surface conditions, tides, wreck structure and remote medical logistics all add task load. A newly certified diver should first build recent drysuit, DSMB and cold-water boat experience at home. A charter may accept a mixed group, but the skipper must have enough suitable sites and supervision. Do not assume that a shallow maximum depth makes an exposed North Atlantic dive beginner-friendly.

A liveaboard-style week charter is the most credible way to experience Shetland's signature wreck, wall and cave mix. Operators such as MV Valhalla and MV Invincible provide the boat platform, local site knowledge, weather flexibility and storage needed for cold-water equipment. Local club, RIB and independent diving can exist, so the destination is not liveaboard-only. However, a land-based visitor should not expect a tropical menu of daily walk-on boats. Confirm whether accommodation and meals are aboard, how many dives are planned, where the vessel embarks and what cylinders, gases, weights, transfers and bedding are included before booking transport.

Local charter guidance describes average visibility around 10 m on the Lerwick recreational program, with exceptional days near 25 m and higher figures reported on selected deeper technical wrecks. That makes Shetland one of the UK's strongest clear-water prospects, but it is not a promise. Recent swell, plankton, rain, tide and seabed disturbance can change visibility from one site or depth to another. Bring a primary and backup light for wreck interiors, overhangs and caves even on a clear day. Photographers should plan both wide-angle wreck work and macro subjects such as nudibranchs, anemones and small cold-water fish.

Start with a balanced list rather than only wreck names. MV Pionersk gives a huge structure from near the surface to about 22 m. SS Gwladmena is an upright advanced wreck reaching roughly 39 m, while the Queen of Sweden adds protected eighteenth-century archaeology near 18 m. Giant's Legs and Noss Head show the submerged stacks, caves, gullies and marine growth that make Shetland more than a wreck destination. MV Lunokhods 1 adds a demanding multi-level profile to about 42 m. The final choice belongs to the skipper because weather, tide, permissions and team ability decide what is safe.

There is no destination-wide recreational dive tag, but several other controls matter. Shetland Islands Council requires notification and approval for diving operations in its port and harbor areas, with at least 7 days' notice where an exclusion zone is needed. Historic Marine Protected Areas such as the Kennemerland, Wrangles Palais and Queen of Sweden allow non-disturbing diving under current council guidance, but nothing may be removed. Other protected wreck or military-remains designations can require a licence or prohibit access. Confirm the exact coordinates and current legal status with the charter. Any wreck material recovered must be reported to the Receiver of Wreck.

Fly to Sumburgh Airport (LSI), about 40 km south of Lerwick, or take the overnight NorthLink ferry from Aberdeen. The direct ferry is about 12 hours and is often easier for a drysuit, heavy camera case, rebreather equipment or a rental vehicle; sailings via Kirkwall take roughly 14 to 15 hours. Flights are faster but require careful baggage planning with Loganair. Confirm the charter berth and boarding time before buying tickets, and leave a protected connection margin. Summer cabins, vehicle spaces and rental cars can sell out, while winter weather and annual ferry maintenance can change schedules.

Yes, but both are specialist cold-water activities rather than dependable visitor products. June through August is the most reasonable window, and even then the site should be selected on the day for shelter, tide, exit and communications. No Shetland beach has an active lifeguard, the water remains cold and currents can be fast. Snorkelers should stay close to shore with a bright float and shore watcher. Freedivers need a qualified safety buddy, line, lanyard, oxygen and a conservative plan. St Ninian's Isle or a Bressay cove may look inviting, but scenery never substitutes for local current knowledge.

Shetland's regular appeal is cold-water detail rather than guaranteed megafauna. Charter descriptions include nudibranchs, anglerfish, lumpsuckers, butterfish, conger, pollack, wrasse, lobster, octopus, crabs and dense dead men's fingers or anemone growth. Common and grey seals live around the islands year-round and may appear underwater, but they should control the encounter. Orcas, dolphins, porpoises and minke whales are possible from boats and shore, especially in summer, yet sightings are opportunistic. Never chase a cetacean or enter a seal haul-out. Follow the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code and use a wildlife guide for topside observation.

A non-diver can build a strong week from Lerwick. The South Mainland combines Jarlshof, Old Scatness, Sumburgh Head and the 500 m St Ninian's Isle tombolo. Seasonal options include Noss seabird cliffs and boats to Mousa Broch. Eshaness and Northmavine suit a road day, while Hermaness on Unst deserves a full day or overnight because it requires two ferry crossings. The Shetland Museum and Archives is the best weather fallback. From mid-May to mid-July, the simmer dim extends evening light; winter instead offers aurora potential and Up Helly Aa, with more closures and transport risk.

Stop diving, provide the highest practical concentration of oxygen, begin basic life support if required and call 999 or 112 for the Coastguard or ambulance service. Give the exact position, dive profile, gases, symptom onset and oxygen remaining. Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick provides local emergency and acute care, but no public recompression chamber was identified in Shetland. Transfer to another facility may be required and should be coordinated by emergency and hyperbaric clinicians, not improvised by the dive group. Plan at least a full charter week plus a connection margin. Specialist programs commonly use six nights aboard and six dive days or a similar Sunday-to-Friday rhythm, which gives the skipper enough flexibility to mix wrecks, walls and caves around changing weather. Add one night before boarding when arriving by air, and protect the final connection if the vessel returns later than expected. Land-based companions can easily use the same week for the South Mainland, Noss, Eshaness, Lerwick and an outer-island trip. A shorter visit may work for local divers, but it magnifies the impact of one cancelled boat day or missed ferry.
