When to go
May through September is the most practical overall window, with June through August easiest for a first visit because daylight is longest, seabird colonies are active and charter schedules are most dependable.
Best overall window
Longer daylight, the driest average months clustered in late spring and early summer, active wildlife sites and late-summer water near 13°C to 14°C.
Outside that window
Winter air commonly averages about 4°C to 6°C, with wind chill, short daylight, reduced opening hours and a higher disruption risk.

Mid-April to mid-August is the most useful puffin window, with major colonies at Sumburgh Head, Noss and Hermaness.
Orca and summer cetacean chance

Orcas regularly pass Shetland in summer, while dolphins and minke whales are also possible.

Otters occur year-round along low shores and around some ferry breakwaters.

The festival normally falls in late April and early May, adding island-wide music to a spring trip as seabirds return and daylight expands.
