When To Go

Season planner for South West Rocks

South West Rocks is a year-round destination, but conditions swing with swell, rain, and the East Australian Current. Water temperatures commonly range from 18°C in the cooler season to around 26°C in summer. For shark-heavy scuba, local operators often report the best grey nurse numbers from May through December, with peak winter concentrations. Topside, winter brings whale migration viewpoints, while spring and autumn balance mild hiking weather with workable ocean windows.

Ideal: Cooler water 18°C to 22°C, peak grey nurse numbers, and strong chances of whale sightings between dives.

Plan Carefully: Warmest water 24°C to 26°C and occasional very clear days, but currents and weather systems can cancel charters. Grey nurse numbers may dip Feb to Apr.

If Fish Rock Cave is your priority, plan a multiday window so weather cancellations do not end the trip.

Ideal: Warmer water 22°C to 26°C for longer sessions. Pick light-wind days under 20.0 kph for easier surface management.

Plan Carefully: Coolest water 18°C to 21°C with more frequent swell. Favor sheltered training or boat days only in settled weather.

Freediving offshore requires boat support and conservative safety protocols.

Ideal: Comfortable hiking weather and longer days. Expect breezes on headlands; pack a wind layer.

Plan Carefully: Hotter days and peak holiday crowds. Book accommodation early and plan early-morning walks to avoid midday heat.

Winter is a strong nondiving season because whale watching is reliable and walking tracks are less humid than summer.
