  • Getting around: A car makes South West Rocks much easier, especially if you want to combine dives with national parks.

Getting There

Most visitors arrive via a fly-drive or road trip.

  • Fly: The closest airports are Port Macquarie (PQQ) and Coffs Harbour (CFS). From either, pick up a rental car and drive to South West Rocks.
  • Drive: South West Rocks is a straightforward stop on the Pacific Highway corridor between Sydney and Brisbane.

Getting Around

A car makes South West Rocks much easier, especially if you want to combine dives with national parks.

  • In town: Many cafes, beaches, and river access points are walkable.
  • To parks and lookouts: Smoky Cape and national park trailheads are easiest by car.
  • Taxis and shuttles: Available but limited compared with major cities. Pre-book if arriving by train or late flights.

Entry Requirements

Australia requires a valid passport and an appropriate visa or travel authority for most non-citizens.

  • Many travelers can use an eVisitor (subclass 651) or an ETA (subclass 601), depending on passport.
  • Visa and entry rules change, so confirm your requirements on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website before booking flights.

Domestic travelers do not have entry formalities beyond standard ID for flights.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • Tanks and weights: Provided by local dive operators on charter days.
  • Rental gear: Both major South West Rocks dive operators offer full rental kits. Reserve sizes in advance for peak weekends.
  • Flights: Domestic baggage allowances can be tight. If traveling with full scuba or freedive kits, pre-purchase extra checked baggage.
  • Cave kit: For Fish Rock Cave, plan on a primary and backup torch, and ask whether you need a reel or whether the guide manages navigation.

Practicalities

Currency

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Cards are widely accepted in town for accommodation, cafes, and supermarkets. Keep some cash for small purchases, park pay stations, and tips if you choose to give them.

ATMs are available in town and in larger nearby centers like Kempsey and Port Macquarie. If you are heading into national parks for the day, withdraw cash in advance.

Electricity

230V 50Hz I

Australia uses Type I plugs. Most modern chargers are dual-voltage, but check your devices before plugging in.

Communications

Mobile coverage is generally good in town, but it can drop in parts of Arakoon and Hat Head national parks. Download offline maps before hikes. Australian eSIMs are widely available, and most accommodations provide Wi-Fi.

Language

English is the primary language. The area is on Dunghutti Country, and you may see local cultural references and place names. Be respectful of cultural sites and follow any access guidance in parks.

Insurance

Carry standard travel insurance that covers driving and outdoor activities, plus dedicated dive accident cover if you are scuba diving or freediving offshore. DAN membership is a common option for dive-specific medical and evacuation support. If you are hiring a car, confirm excess and windscreen coverage because wildlife and highway driving are common.
