Offshore Marsa Alam reef with steep walls and strong current.
Offshore Marsa Alam reef with steep walls and strong current.
Boat or RIB access only; use a Marsa Alam operator or liveaboard that can brief current strategy.
Shaab Sharm is an exposed offshore reef in the Marsa Alam area, built around steep walls and two plateau lines. The eastern route is the main drift line, while the western plateau gives a calmer option when the current is up. Expect boat access, strong current, and a site that suits experienced divers who can stay tight to the reef. Coral cover is strong, and the fish action can include sharks and other big pelagics.

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
15m - 45m
Depth Note
Main routes run roughly 15-35 m on the plateaus; the cave entrance sits deeper at about 45 m and should not be penetrated without training.
Best Season
Year-round, with calmer weather windows preferred when wind and swell are lighter.
Typical Conditions
Exposed offshore reef with very strong current, steep walls, and occasional waves on the approach; the western plateau is usually the easier line.
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Stay close to the reef on the eastern line, and do not attempt the cave without proper training and a site-specific briefing.
Access Restrictions
Boat access only; plan for an experienced team and current-aware entry procedures.
Legal Notes
Shaab Sharm sits in the Wadi El-Gemal–Hamata protected-area context, so follow the day-boat or liveaboard briefing and any park rules on the day.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Best as a drift dive with good buoyancy and disciplined reef-hugging on the eastern line. The western plateau is the more forgiving route when current builds.
Freediving
Advanced freedivers only. The exposed reef and plateaus suit conservative depth planning and strong current awareness.
Snorkeling
Not a snorkel-first site. Offshore access, current, and exposed water make it a poor fit except in very calm conditions.
