Akiu Great Falls is a rare freshwater dive in the plunge pool beneath one of Japan's best-known waterfalls. The site is reached by parking at the overlook and walking down to the basin, so the experience begins with a trail approach before the water even comes into view. Underwater, the draw is the falling-water atmosphere and the chance to dive in a place shaped by spray, turbulence, and a strong river-fed environment rather than a reef system. Aquatic life is limited, but freshwater fish such as char, trout, and occasional cherry salmon may appear in the basin.
