About Tanjung Tengah

Tanjung Tengah is the central house reef off Pasir Panjang on Redang, where a long sandy beach lets divers and snorkellers wade straight into a shallow reef used for easy shore dives, discovery sessions, night entries, and casual reef laps. The southern side is widely known as Shark Bay because juvenile blacktip reef sharks use the shallows, and the reef also turns up barracuda, turtles, rays, squid, and common reef fish close to shore. Because it is one of the easiest reefs to reach on the island, it is also one of the busiest. Stay inside the marked reef area, watch for boats outside the swim line, and use careful buoyancy over the very shallow coral near shore.

Tanjung Tengah Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

3m - 15m

Depth Note

Public descriptions consistently frame Tanjung Tengah as a shallow house reef used for snorkelling, discovery dives, and night beach dives.

Best Season

March to October is the normal visiting season, with the calmest holiday conditions usually inside that window. March and October can be choppier near the monsoon shoulders, and most resorts close from November through February.

Typical Conditions

Expect a shallow beach-entry reef with easy surface access, busy in-water traffic around Pasir Panjang, and more comfortable sea states in the settled season than near the monsoon edges.

Safety & Access At Tanjung Tengah

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Boat traffic

Safety Notes

A mooring line separates the reef areas from the boat lane; stay clear of the boat lane.

Access Restrictions

Do not snorkel or dive beyond the white markers because boats run outside the reef line, and there are no lifeguards supervising the house reef.

Legal Notes

Redang sits inside a protected marine park. Do not collect coral, shells, fish, or other marine life, and do not anchor or attach lines onto coral or submerged reef structure.

Freedive

Listed as suitable for freediving.

Snorkel

This is one of Redang's easiest snorkel reefs, with shallow coral close to the beach and the Shark Bay side especially popular for blacktip nursery sightings. Stay inside the white markers because boats travel outside them.
