Safety & Access At Vilarinho das Furnas
Site conditions, restrictions, and access requirements.
Site Conditions
Cold waterLow visibility
Safety Notes
Cold freshwater, variable visibility, and an irregular bottom around submerged structures make slow buoyancy control important. Check the reservoir level before entry and avoid pushing into marginal access zones.
Access Restrictions
Use shoreline access only where open and respect reservoir and park operations. Water-level shifts can change the entry path and how much of the village footprint is reachable.
Legal Notes
Inside a protected park and dam reservoir. Follow local access rules and avoid closed or operational areas; do not assume all shoreline sections are open year-round.

Scuba Diving
Best as a relaxed shore dive for divers comfortable with freshwater navigation and buoyancy. The appeal is the submerged village layout rather than reef life.
Freediving
Possible in calm conditions for experienced freedivers, but the site is more rewarding on scuba because the main features sit below easy surface viewing.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling is limited to the shallow edge and surface scenery. The most interesting village features are better explored with scuba or freediving.
