Long Reef (South)
Advanced offshore reef with drop-offs, gorgonians and shark potential.
Local operator required
The site is normally dived with a local operator because of its offshore distance, advanced depth band and current-sensitive planning.
About Long Reef (South)
Long Reef (South) is the deeper southern end of a long offshore reef near Al Lith, dived for its broad coral slopes, major drop-offs and the blue-water shark potential that comes with stronger moving water. The route usually follows the reef edge where soft and hard corals build over the shallower ledge before the wall drops away on both sides and large gorgonians appear deeper down. Planning matters here because it is a long boat ride from shore, the working depth is already advanced territory, and current along the deeper faces can quickly turn it into a more demanding drift-style dive.

Long Reef (South) Planning Details
Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.
Reported Depth
25m - 35m
Depth Note
South reef is described between 25–35 m, with major declines (drop-offs) around the reef and a larger surrounding decline noted as 70–80 m.
Best Season
The central Saudi Red Sea is dived much of the year, but calmer spring and autumn windows are often the easier periods for remote offshore reefs where current and long boat rides shape the day.
Typical Conditions
Expect clear offshore visibility, strong coral growth across the upper reef and noticeable current building along the deeper southern declines.
Safety & Access At Long Reef (South)
Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
Treat the southern section as an advanced reef dive with real blue-water exposure. Strong current on the drop-offs, deeper working depths and possible shark encounters make gas planning, team spacing and pickup discipline more important than on shallower inshore reefs.
Access Restrictions
Long Reef (South) is an offshore boat-access site reached from the Al Lith area rather than a shore-entry reef.

Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba
Most dives work the upper reef structure first, then let the guide decide how far down the drop-off to take the group based on current, gas and comfort with the deeper blue-water edge.
Freedive
Freedivers who visit the area typically treat the southern end as a current- and boat-managed blue-water reef rather than a relaxed shallow training site.
